Pilón de Azúcar beach

This is a unique beach located in a paradise bay where the Guajira desert descends into the waters of the Caribbean Sea.   Whirlwinds of burnt orange and red sand glide over the bright turquoise surface of the sea and create a striking deep contrast. It becomes especially colorful during sunset, when the water turns into an orange-red palette.

Beach description

This is a wild beach with rich yellow sand, which is shaded by dark brown stones randomly scattered across the coast. It is always quiet, calm and not crowded here. It is an ideal place for artists and photographers, creative people who want to enjoy the virgin natural beauty. It is located three hours north of Riohacha at the La Vela Cape. You can get here on motorbikes that are rented with an accompanying person.

Pilon de Azukar is translated as the Sugar pylon (El Pilon de Azukar). He got this name because of the hill located on the beach, the top of which seems far away but which can be reached on foot in just 15 minutes. Conquerors of this height will be able to see the statue of La Virgen de Fatima, erected here in 1938 by Spanish pearl hunters, as well as an impressive view of the Caribbean.

It's pretty windy here. As a result, large waves are formed on the water. Pilon de Azucar beach is not the best place to relax with children. It is more suitable for those who like to explore the unexplored parts of nature and enjoy the water element. Also, this is not a place for tourist swimming. It is recommended to swim here only for those who feel confident in the water. There may be stones at the bottom.

When is it better to go?

The best time to visit Colombia is from December to April, when the weather is relatively warm and the rains are replaced by the dry season.  It should be borne in mind that the coast is always hotter than in the highlands, for example, in the capital Bogota.

Infrastructure

Underdeveloped. Of course, a couple of seasonal open-air shops will offer you souvenirs, some food, as well as indispensable things for a beach holiday, but if you plan to go here for the whole day, it is better to take everything you need with you. Necessary items include water, food, a hat, sunblock, sneakers, swimming trunks, a towel, a charged camera or phone.

There are no hotels or leisure rooms nearby. The nearest one is at least 1 km from the coast and is called 7 Mares Cabo De La Vela. However, few people want to stay here overnight: after a day's walk through the rocky terrain, you want to shelter quickly from the wind somewhere in a more calm and protected place and give your feet a rest.

Useful information

  1. Here you can eat local lobster for less than a hot dog or a bag of chips.
  2. If you still decide to come here with the children, take a kite. Constant strong winds create ideal conditions for the favorite children's fun.
  3. It will be a problem to get here for older people. Firstly, tourists are transported mainly by motorcycles (less often by jeeps). Secondly, the beach area itself is inconvenient for movement. Therefore, those who adequately assess their strengths - have good physical fitness and comfortable shoes - can go here.
