Maltakva beach

It is located in the western part of Georgia on the Black Sea. Poti, the country's northern sea gate, is located three kilometers to the north. In fact, Maltakva is its main beach, as the sea is rather dirty because there is a large port within the city.

Beach description

The beach is a long and wide coastline, covered with gray fine sand. It contains magnetite particles, but not in such quantity as in Ureki. Nevertheless, Maltakva used to be considered a balneological resort of all-Union significance, and health resorts and sanatoriums were located on its territory, which, after the collapse of the USSR, are in desolation. Now this beach is preferred by judges of a quiet relaxing rest alone with nature, families with small children, and on weekends - lovers of picnics near the sea.

There is practically no familiar beach infrastructure on the coast, so it is necessary to take care of everything necessary independently. It is especially important to have umbrellas and sunscreeners, since there is no vegetation on the beach in the shade of which it is possible to wait out the heat.

From the south, Maltakva borders with the Grigoleti beach, which is surrounded by a pine forest from the coast. The seaboard there is noticeably already, but it is possible to hide from the heat in the shade of giant trees and enjoy the divine aroma of needles.

The sea in Maltakva is shallow and warm, with an even safe bottom and gradually increasing depth. Due to the proximity of the open sea and the absence of mountains, winds often blow here, catching up high waves. They wash ashore algae and small garbage, which somewhat spoils the overall impression and creates certain inconveniences.

When is the best time to go?

In summer, Georgia has very hot weather, which sometimes interferes with enjoying  beach vacations and excursions. Therefore, the best time to visit the Black Sea resorts falls on May, June and September.

Infrastructure

On the beach you can have fun on water rides, have a bite to eat at the only cafe at the entrance, and also get boiled corn and traditional Georgian sweets from local merchants.

Along the beach there are cottages with the signs “For Rent”, there are several modern hotels, but, in fact, Maltakva is a tiny seaside village with very poor infrastructure. Therefore, choosing local places to relax, it is worth pre-tuning to the rustic atmosphere, lack of entertainment and unobtrusive service, which are more than compensated by the famous Georgian hospitality and excellent traditional cuisine.

Direct minibuses run from Poti to the beach; in high season, boats and motor boats go from the port. You can go from Batumi to Maltakva using any minibus bound for Poti or Zugdidi (travel time is about an hour).

The most popular accommodation variants in these places are guest houses located on the beach. One of them is House with Lake view near the Black Sea, a small wooden cottage surrounded by exotic palm trees and a shady garden. There are three bedrooms, a kitchen equipped with modern appliances, a large living room and a terrace with sea views. There is free parking, satellite TV and free Wi-Fi. There is a picturesque lake next to the hotel, where you can go fishing, boating and bird watching.
