Rondinara beach

Renowned for its distinctive bay, Rondinara Beach captivates visitors with its turquoise, horseshoe-shaped waters, reminiscent of a shell cradled by a dazzlingly white shore. This unique configuration allows beachgoers to bask in the tranquility of the warm, gentle waters, all while being ensconced by the scenic cliffs that embrace this natural amphitheater. Nestled between Porto-Vecchio and Bonifacio, Rondinara Beach stands as one of Corsica's most cherished coastal gems.

Beach description

The beach is accessed by a winding road that runs through the tiny village of Suartone, stretching on a mountain slope. If you're going in the off-season, it won't take long to get there. The slope allows you to observe the whole area from a height, presenting an impressive image. You can clearly see the rich palette of rocks, green meadows close to the beach, and wooded slopes dotted with shrubs and cork trees.

The main beach is sandy and usually crowded, located right behind the parking lot. It's protected from the strong winds by the surrounding rocks. If you venture a little north, bypassing the rocky water ledges, you can reach more secluded and deeper beaches with pebbly bottoms. However, these are not places for babies; they are more suited for experienced swimmers.

Rondinara may not be easily accessible, especially for Europeans accustomed to smooth highways. The locale here is much wilder than the Côte d'Azur. Yet, in summer, many people flock to this beauty, creating traffic jams on the narrow road. What attracts travelers from different countries to Rondinara Beach:

  • The opportunity to fully relax and connect with nature, and to test the veracity of the mystical stories about this place.
  • A cozy bay with fine sand, a gently sloping beach, and warm, calm waters will be appreciated by parents of young children. Here, they will find comfort and safety, along with a playground.
  • All other categories of holidaymakers will also find their needs met:
  • There's a parking lot right at the entrance (payment is charged for the whole day, not hourly!);
  • You can rent a straw umbrella, mattress, or other beach equipment;
  • Right on the beach, there's a restaurant where you can have breakfast or dinner, and a cafe offers refreshing drinks and ice cream;
  • The sea center offers boats, catamarans, kayaks, and buoys for rent, allowing you to moor your boat at beautiful spots along the coast;
  • The beach and parking lot are guarded, but you still shouldn't leave valuable things in the car.
  • Only boat owners have access to the pier.
  • Working hours are from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM. If you visit between June 15th and September 15th, or a month before the designated date and in the second half of September, the hours are until 7:00 PM.
  • Dogs are allowed, but they must be supervised at all times.

One of the unique features of Rondinara Beach is the local animals that mingle with beachgoers peacefully soaking up the sun on the sand. Cows roam freely and even sunbathe next to people.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Corsica for a beach vacation is typically between May and September, when the Mediterranean climate ensures warm temperatures and minimal rainfall. Here's a breakdown of what to expect:

  • May and June: These months mark the beginning of the beach season, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. The sea might still be a bit cool for swimming, but the weather is ideal for enjoying the sun and exploring the island.
  • July and August: These are the hottest months, perfect for beachgoers looking to bask in the sun and enjoy warm sea temperatures. However, this is also peak tourist season, so expect more crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • September: As the summer crowds dissipate, September offers a more tranquil beach experience. The water remains warm from the summer heat, making it an excellent time for swimming and water sports.

For those seeking a balance between good weather and fewer tourists, late May to early June or September are ideal times for a Corsican beach vacation. Always remember to check the local calendar for events and festivals that might influence your decision on when to visit.

Infrastructure

For those who prefer to stay directly on the beach, there is an excellent solution: set up a tent or rent a small mobile home at the campsite. The campsite is fully equipped to cater to tourists, offering amenities such as rest areas, shower facilities, and snack options. Additionally, there is a swimming pool on-site, providing a refreshing escape from the heat. Children will find plenty of activities to keep them entertained both at the campsite and on the nearby beach.

Lovers of comfort may need to travel at least 10 km towards Bonifacio or Porto-Vecchio to find accommodations with more traditional amenities. One of the closest hotels is A Cheda, a 4-star establishment. Guests are greeted with cozy beds, clean soft towels, and a friendly, attentive staff. Breakfast is included. The rooms feature Corsican-style decor, utilizing natural materials. The hotel offers spa services, massages, and a pool. Pet-friendly accommodations are available. Guests can relax in the sun or shade on the terrace or in the garden adjacent to the hotel.

Beyond the beach, numerous restaurants and cafes are situated closer to the tourist centers. Each establishment boasts a diverse menu, featuring European, French, and authentic Corsican cuisine. While prices may be on the higher side, the service is consistently excellent, and the food is skillfully presented. The selection is extensive, so if you encounter any difficulty in choosing, the waitstaff is ready to provide recommendations.

To sample local specialties, be sure to order from the fish menu, try various spicy sausages, goat meat cooked over an open fire, or stewed boar. Vegetarians will also find delightful options. Corsicans hold a special reverence for bread and baked goods, with each establishment offering its unique, specially crafted bread. A variety of pancakes is a highlight in every restaurant, whether by the beach or in the city center.

Useful information

  1. It won't be a problem to get to the Rondinara Beach with a car and no fear of difficulties in the form of a narrow and curved track. The nearest cities with extensive road networks are Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio.
  2. When going to the beach, you need to take everything you need with you, especially when it comes to the off-season. If you need, for example, drinking water, you won't be able to get it anywhere in a nature reserve in the middle where Rondinara is located.
  3. The beach, most often in more remote small bays, has a lot of algae, which creates some difficulties during swimming. The large volume of marine vegetation and boats also makes snorkeling difficult. But vegetation is not removed because it helps to restore ecology.
  4. When walking on the shoals, small bays with rocky ledges away from the central beach, it's desirable to wear shoes for swimming. The bare feet are easy to hurt on sharp rocks.
  5. The beauty and health of nature is very much cherished here. That's why you shouldn't throw food leftovers, beer cans or plastic splinters of anything in the water. It's recommended to use the sunscreen products not before but after swimming, the substances contained in them have a bad effect on the sea and its inhabitants. Although, it wouldn't be bad to follow these rules not only on the white sands of Corsica.
