Beach description
Koumbara Beach, a serene sand and pebble retreat, is nestled 3 km northwest of the main port of Ios. It boasts the following features:
- Intimate size: Spanning 300 m in length and reaching up to 40 m in width;
- Tranquil atmosphere: Free from tourist crowds, persistent vendors, or raucous parties;
- Safety: Sheltered within a rocky bay, Koumbara safeguards visitors from high waves and storms. A gradual depth increase and the absence of strong underwater currents are characteristic of this haven;
- Pristine ecology: Renowned for its crisp air, crystal-clear waters, and minimal litter, Koumbara has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag status multiple times.
The beach is framed by snow-white rocks, lush trees, and rolling hills. From its shores, one can gaze upon the neighboring islands, imposing rock formations, and the vast expanse of the sea.
Koumbara is a haven for those who cherish peaceful leisure. It offers excellent conditions for swimming, sunbathing, hiking, and organizing mountain excursions. Nearby cliffs beckon to divers and snorkelers with their allure.
The beach's primary visitors are international tourists, families with children, and the youth. Approximately 70% of the guests hail from Australia, Western Europe, and North America.
Interesting fact: Koumbara was once an untouched beach favored by nudists from across Europe. However, during the 80s and 90s, the construction of hotels transformed it into a destination for a more conservative vacationing crowd.
When is the best time to go?
The best time to visit Ios for a beach vacation is during the summer months, particularly from June to September. This period offers the ideal conditions for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the island's vibrant nightlife.
- June: The beginning of the summer brings pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and the opportunity to enjoy the island's natural beauty in relative tranquility.
- July and August: These are the peak tourist months, perfect for those who enjoy a bustling atmosphere and want to experience the island's famous party scene. The weather is hot and sunny, ideal for spending long days on the beach.
- September: As the summer winds down, the temperatures remain warm but the number of visitors starts to decrease. This is a great time for those looking for a more relaxed vacation while still taking advantage of the island's clear waters and beautiful beaches.
Regardless of the month you choose, Ios's stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and Greek hospitality make it a fantastic destination for a beach vacation.
