Beach description

Ios island has over 40 beaches. But none of them can match Mylopotas, a band of sand and sea one kilometer long in the very heart of Aegean Sea. It is situated at the bottom of mountains, and is surrounded with luxuriant trees, exotic bushes, and traditional Greek villas.

Mylopotas Beach is covered with light yellow sand that makes a beach visitor want to walk here in bare feet. It is famous for warm, transparent, and crystal clear water of emerald color. Another feature of this beach is its perfect order that was singled out with several Blue Flag awards.

The beach consists of several zones:

  1. south part (near the night club) is the loudest and the merriest place. Music is heard constantly, and free deck chairs stand there;
  2. the central site is a zone with sling chairs, bars, and tourist attractions. A perfect place for “lazy vacations”;
  3. periphery - remote locations free from noise and crowds. People come here to pend time in close circle and to enjoy beautiful nature of Hellas.

The main cohort of Mylopotas is represented by tourists from Australia, Italia, Sweden, and Ireland. Moreover, tourists from North America, Eastern Europe, and the Balkan Peninsula come here.

The beach is safe for kids: in order to reach depth, you need to walk 5-10 meters away from the coastline. Small waves and the absence of underwater currents are typical for these places. The sea bottom is soft.

Guests of Mylopotas are offered parachuting, water ski, sea tours, and diving courses. This place also has perfect conditions for subbathing, swimming, and hiking. The part of tourists in engaged into mountain climbing. And people who prefer more calm atmosphere, enjoy tropic cocktails, and delicious cuisine.

Mylopotas is the most popular beach of Ios island. It gets filled with tourists at 9-10 AM. But due to huge size of the beach (over 1 km long and to 60 m wide), there is always room here. The best time for visiting it is early morning.

Interesting fact: Herodotus, the author of the story of Troy (“Iliad”) was buried close to Mylopotas. The ancient Greek philosophers Plato and Pausanias told about his final resting place.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
