Episkopi beach

Episkopi is a small but wide, very picturesque and rather crowded (especially in summer) sandy beach of Kythnos, especially popular among young people and families with kids. It is located on the northwestern edge of the island, in a closed bay opposite the village of the same name, 2 km from the port of Merihas and about 5 km from Chora.

Beach description

Episkopi Beach covered with light gray fine sand stretches along the bay for 500 m in a curve. In the first turn, the beach is the most popular among families with small kids, and there are more than enough reasons of such attractiveness:

  • the water entry is slightly sloping, the waters are very shallow;
  • the bay is surrounded with hills protecting it from strong winds and high waves;
  • the Armiriki trees typical for sand Greek beaches grow here, creating the natural shelter from heat due to their thick leaves;
  • For its clean shore and the incredible dark blue water color, the beach was granted the Blue Flag status, which only increases the level of tourists' trust to the reputation of Episkopi as one of the best beaches on Kytnos island.

Partially developed infrastructure, proximity of the port and easy access of the beach in combination with these characteristics make Episkopi a perfect place for safe and comfortable recreation with small kids. People come here to enjoy beach recreation in the atmosphere of silence and calmness.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

The presence of some signs of infrastructure adds the popularity of family vacations to this beach. There is organized parking near the beach where you can leave a car. Mooring places for maritime transport are located in the southern part of the beach.

There is a beach bar on the southern edge of the beach, which offers not only drinks and snacks, but also rental sun loungers and umbrellas. Music plays constantly here, and quieter places can be found in the center of the beach in the shadow of the armiriki. There is also a single tavern in the vicinity of the beach. More catering establishments can be found in the village itself.

The village of Merihas is the best for staying. You can always find offers for rental housing in the private sector here. For example, you can stay at Villa Elena Apartments – beautiful Cycladic-style apartments, surrounded by beautiful gardens and located just 500 meters from the port of Merihas and almost by the beach.
