Pyrgos tou Fonia beach

Pyrgos tou Fonia is a small, but interesting beach in the northeastern outskirts of Samotraki island. This beautiful coast also has the grim name of the “Killer Tower”. A reminder of this name is the ruins of a medieval rectangular fortress towering on the shore of Pyrgos tou Fonia. This tower is believed to be a small part of the majestic serf complex that existed in this area.

Beach description

According to one legend, a murder once occurred in the tower, which served to rename the area. According to another version, the fort itself was named so, because someone drowned in the same-name river nearby. Despite the gloomy legends, this is a very beautiful beach with incredibly clear waters of a turquoise hue, sand and shingle coastline and large gray shingle at the bottom. A light breeze often blows here and small waves can be formed.

By conditions, this wild beach resembles Kipos. There are no conveniences, but for romantics, couples in love and everyone, who wants to run away from the noisy crowds, this is the best rest spot on Samotraki. In addition, in the outskirts of the beach there is one of the most picturesque waterfalls of the island - Tu Foniya, which forms the vatra (natural baths) - the main "zest" of Samotraki.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
