Huanchaco is another popular destination for surfers in Peru. There are waves for training, for beginners and real professionals, for whom Huanchaco hosts international competitions.

Beach description

The beach is a narrow strip of a sand along the shore. It is not very comfortable to sunbathe, but the sunsets are wonderful. In the low season there are few tourists, but there are always a lot of surfers.

Huanchaco is also famous for its reed boats, which the locals master for traditional fishing. They stand along the beach. The Peruvians say that they can safely go out into the ocean. It remains a mystery, how they manage to overcome the tidal wave on these long, fragile straws.

Huanchaco is a colonial town that grew out of a fishing village. The local landmark is an old Baroque church of the XVI century. From here you can drive to the ancient city of Chan Chan, where the walls of ancient settlement sites with a height of 10 meters have been restored. You can reach the beach from Trujillo by shuttle bus in 20 minutes.

When is it better to go

The high season in Peru begins in February and lasts until April. It is summer in South America at this time. Ocean water warms up to +24˚С. The air temperature sometimes reaches +40˚С, but the winds become stronger. The rest of the time, the ocean water is cool, not higher than +18˚С. If to go for the sake of a beach holiday, you will not find a better time than in our winter months.
