Puerto Chicama beach

Puerto Chicama is a true Mecca for surfers. The waves here can reach up to 4 km in length and roll toward the shore in smooth, cascading tiers, offering an unparalleled surfing experience.

Beach description

Surfers claim that at Puerto Chicama's beach, you can ride a single wave all the way to the shore. The wave's impressive height is sculpted by coastal cliffs and winds that refract it, creating a continuous cycle. Local authorities have recognized the value of this natural wonder and have prohibited any construction within one kilometer of the coastal zone to preserve the area's unique character. Surfers from around the globe flock here to experience the world's longest wave.

However, the water here is much colder than at other resorts in Peru. Yet, local children frolic in the waters of Puerto Chicama without wetsuits and seem to thrive. Overall, this destination is not ideal for those who prefer sunbathing and calm waters.

Access to the beach requires multiple transfers. Flights are available only to the capital. From Lima to Trujillo, which is near the beach, the journey takes 8 hours by bus or 1 hour by local airlines. Subsequently, a taxi or a rented car is needed to reach the beach.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Peru for a beach vacation is during the Peruvian summer, which spans from December to March. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for beachgoers looking to enjoy the country's stunning coastline.

  • December to February: These months are the peak of summer, with hot temperatures and clear skies, ideal for sunbathing and swimming. Coastal cities like Máncora, Punta Sal, and Tumbes are particularly popular during this time.
  • March: As summer winds down, March still provides plenty of sunshine with slightly cooler temperatures, making it a great time for those who prefer less intense heat. It's also a period when the beaches are less crowded, offering a more relaxed atmosphere.

It's important to note that while the northern beaches are suitable for year-round visits due to their tropical climate, the central and southern beaches are best enjoyed during the summer months. Regardless of when you choose to go, Peru's diverse coastline ensures a memorable beach vacation.
