Puerto Chicama beach

Puerto Chicama is a real Mecca for surfers. The waves here reach 4 km in length and roll up to the shore in smooth steps.

Beach description

Surfers say that on Puerto Chicama's beach, you can get to the shore on one wave at a time. The wave height is created by coastal cliffs and winds that refracts it and make it cyclic. The local authorities have captured the benefits of this natural phenomenon and banned any construction closer to one kilometer to the coastal zone in order to preserve the uniqueness of the place. Surfers from all over the world are coming here to try the longest wave.

Although, the water here is much colder than in order resorts in Peru. Though, the local kids are splashing in Puerto Chicama without wetsuits and feel great. In general, this place is not for sunbathers and fans of calm water.

You have to get to the beach with transfers. Planes fly only to the capital. From Lima to Trujillo, in the vicinity of which there is a beach, 8 hours by bus or local airlines 1 hour. And then another taxi or rented car to the beach.

When is it better to go

The high season in Peru begins in February and lasts until April. It is summer in South America at this time. Ocean water warms up to +24˚С. The air temperature sometimes reaches +40˚С, but the winds become stronger. The rest of the time, the ocean water is cool, not higher than +18˚С. If to go for the sake of a beach holiday, you will not find a better time than in our winter months.
