Cattlewash beach

Cattlewash Beach is an impressive rocky beach on the Atlantic coast, located in the parish of St. Joseph on the eastern edge of Barbados, near the town of Bathsheb. Its name translates as “a place for bathing cattle,” since it was once used in this way. Not intended for bathing people, this beach still attracts ecotourism lovers, romantics and photo shoot lovers to photos of fantastically beautiful landscapes with a share of surreal charm.

Beach description

The Kettlevoosh coastline is characterized by the most picturesque landscapes, which are considered to be one of the most recognizable on the covers of island guides. It is covered with sand of a yellow-orange hue, surrealism of which is given by numerous fractions of snags, thrown ashore by storms. The bizarre scenery of the beach is complemented by many red algae, also washed ashore by the waves and covering this long coast, several kilometers long, like a torn carpet. The beach is considered to be one of the longest in Barbados.

As for water rest here, it is worth noting such features of the beach:

  • Kettlevoosh is characterized by very pure turquoise waters, but they are unsuitable for swimming for many reasons, although significant shallow bars are watched near the coast.
  • The frequent stormy winds, that can occur suddenly, and very high waves, as well as numerous sharp rocks on the sea bottom and strong coastal currents turn these waters into a life-threatening place for swimming.
  • But on the coastline it is possible to find many natural pools, formed by coastal cliffs. Everyone can plunge into their waters, warmed up by the sun.

Here you can also have a picnic on the picturesque coast or enjoy a leisurely walk along the coastline, admiring the powerful waves and beautiful cliffs in the sea and on the coastline. Usually on the coast there are few people on working days, but towards evening, there are always more vacationers. It attracts romantics, who want to enjoy the picturesque sunset. On weekends, tourists are often brought to the beach for excursions.

When is the best time to go?

In Barbados island, the temperature is hot all year round, so the only thing that can ruin your vacation experience is the rainy season in summer. Any other period, the weather in Barbados is sunny and comfortable for all ages.

Infrastructure

The Kattlvosh beach is built up with numerous villas and holiday homes, which are rented to tourists during the summer. Therefore, finding housing here is not problematic. In the summer evenings, locals organize parties to which everyone is invited. The closest to the beach is a mini-hotel Atlantis Historic Inn, located in a historic building on the east beach in the fishing village of Tent Bay.

In the vicinity of the beach (about 150 m from it) you can find a good restaurant serving Caribbean cuisine, and a little further are located many shops with food. But on the beach itself there are no kiosks, shops, bars and cafes. Therefore, when planning to spend the whole day here, you should stock up your food and water in advance. There are also no toilets and showers on the beach, as well as loungers for rent. On weekends, the coast is controlled by lifeguards.

Useful information

  1. You can get to the coast by car or on foot from the town of Bathsheb. You can also look at the neighboring Bathsheba beach located south of Cattlewash, which is also not suitable for swimming, but attracts with the possibility of colorful photo shoots on the beach. You can also visit the Andromeda Gardens and Barclays Park in this region.
  2. The iconic landmark of the Kattlvosh coast is a huge stone, located almost near the sea waters. Perhaps once he broke away from the coastal cliffs and rolled to the sea. Whatever it was, now this place is a kind of “Mecca” on this beach for tourists who want to make the most colorful photos here. There are several more similar coastal stones and rocks. But this untitled stone is the largest on the shore. Someone was even able to set a bench on its top, and brave extremists seek to climb in there to be photographed.
  3. Since the waves on the beach often form very high, it is not recommended to be placed for picnics very close to the sea. It is better to choose a cliff protected area, which will provide a pleasant shadow and maximum safety in case of strong winds.
