Armenistis beach

Located on the northern coast of Ikaria next to the small fishing village of Armenistis. This is one of the most popular resorts of the island, attracting tourists with magnificent beaches, well-developed infrastructure and picturesque hiking routes. The proximity of the highway and the port of Evdilos make Armenistis a convenient starting point for excursions to western Ikaria - a real treasury for travelers interested in the unique nature of the island, its history and cultural traditions.

Beach description

Armenistis is a small village with snow-white houses, buried in the dense greenery of olive groves, picturesque harbor and the ancient church of St. Nikholas. Despite the impressive flow of tourists, there is a calm and peaceful atmosphere, typical of Ikaria as a whole.

The beach is located in a small cozy bay, protected from the strong winds of the rocky capes and high hills. The shore is covered with fine golden sand, and washed by the emerald waters of the tender Ikaria Sea. Entrance to the water is gentle, without sudden changes in relief. Certain inconveniences for swimmers can create strong currents and waves that are characteristic of the entire northern coast. So don't swim too far and swim near wild rocky areas.

The beach is equipped with toilets, showers and changing cabins are offered for a fee. Lovers of active leisure can enjoy water rides and rent sports equipment. The beach has a volleyball net and children's playground with inflatable trampolines and slides. There are numerous taverns and snack bars along the coast, where you can have a good time and enjoy the midday heat.

One of the most popular is Taverna Paskalia, which serves delicious food at low price. It is always crowded and fun, as well as friendly and sociable owner of Haris - the soul of this place. The Dolphinia tavern is located in the eastern part of the bay and has its own piece of the beach. Unlike Pascal, there is a calm chamber atmosphere and visitors can not only satisfy their hunger and thirst, but also use umbrellas and sun loungers.

There are several other beaches in the vicinity of Armenistis, which are considered to be some of the best beaches on the coast. There are Livadia, Messakti and Gialiskari, located in the scenic neighboring bays surrounded by pine forests.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Useful information

In addition to the beautiful beaches, Armenistis attracts visitors with its amazing natural landscapes and untouched nature. In the vicinity of the village there are dozens of walking and cycling routes that will allow you to feel the beauty of this delightful corner of Ikaria.

The most popular walking trail starts from Livadia Beach and passes through pine forests, picturesque lakes and the majestic Halari gorge with its fantastic beauty waterfalls and ancient stone bridges. Along the way, tourists will meet tiny authentic villages where you can relax, satisfy your hunger and thirst and explore the traditional local life.

Of particular note are the original "house-stones", which can only be seen in these places. They appeared around the XVIII century, when the inhabitants of the island were often subjected to raids by pirates. Therefore, houses began to be built from huge boulders that served as a roof and walls. The dwellings were safely hidden in the thickets of trees - and now it is very difficult to find them.

In the vicinity of the village there is a unique bio-reserve, which is included in the list of objects of the natural protection organization "Natura 2000". On its territory, you can meet many rare species of plants, animals and birds, as well as admire waterfalls, lakes and picturesque gorges overgrown with relict forest.
