Santa Catalina beach

The beach of a small fisherman town Santa Catalina is located in the Chiriqui bay on the Pacific coast of Panama, in the Veraguas province.

Beach description

The coastline, covered in volcanic sand, is divided into two areas. The main beach of Santa Catalina has been a beloved destination for surfers for about 50 years due to the high waves and the wind. The waves reach as high as 7.5 meters from February to August.

Visitors are allowed to swim during the low tide period, and it's recommended to wear shoes before entering the water. The uneven volcanic sea bottom has protrusions and deep cavities in this region. Leaving your children unsupervised here is dangerous.

The beach doesn't have any infrastructure so it's not very popular among those who prefer traditional beach vacations, these people consider Santa Catalina a boring place. However, divers, surfers and snorkelers appreciate this place very much. Boats to Isla de Coiba - a real heaven for divers with unique underwater coral reefs and the richest sea flora and fauna - depart from the coast of Santa Catalina.

There are several cheap hotels, restaurants and cafes in the town. Camps for surfers are operating along the coast.

When is it better to go

Favorable time for a beach holiday in Panama begins in the second half of December and lasts until April. Air temperature during this period does not exceed + 32 °C, water temperature – not lower than + 23 °C. It is noteworthy that in the Caribbean Sea the water is several degrees warmer than on the Pacific coast.
