Megalo Livadi beach

Located on the southwest coast of Serifos, eleven kilometers from Chora, the capital of the island. In the neighborhood there is the village of the same name, which until the mid-60s of the last century was the center of the mining industry of Serifos. Right on the shore you can see abandoned industrial buildings, rusty trolleys and rails leading to the mines. Such an unusual open-air museum attracts an additional flow of tourists to these places, so Megalo Livadi is always quite crowded.

Beach description

The beach is situated in the depth of a picturesque bay protected from strong winds and currents. The beach is rather narrow, covered with brown sand, and is surrounded with palm trees and tamarisks.

Megalo Livadi is a perfect option for family recreation. The sea is shallow, calm, and well-heated. The bottom is even and safe, and the water entry is gradual and safe.

Entertainments include canoeing, sapboarding, and water ski. In the haven, you can rent a yacht and have a sea tour along the beach.

The beach has two excellent taverns famous for theit delicious food. Fish and seafood dishes, salads and local desserts are delicacies of this place.

This beach has no habitual infrastructure but there is no much need for it. You will feel quite comfortable if you lay your towel on soft sand, and tamarisk trees will give the shadow to protect from afternoon heat. There is a small free car parking lot, and you can find several small shops and souvenir stores on the beach.

The main highlight of Megalo Livadi is, without any doubt, a magnificent view of the bay and the abandoned rock quarry. In sunset rays, it is a magnificent view that will strike a chord of anyone's heart. For this reason, tourists and village inhabitants enjoy visiting this beach at sunset to enjoy the view of golden rocks and bright azure Aegean Sea.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Since Megalo Livadi is not a popular tourist resort, there are no large hotels and hotel complexes in the village. You can rent small cottages and villas that are comfortable to accommodate a family or a large company. One of the most attractive options is a guest house Almi House, located a few steps from the beach.

It was a typical fishing lodge on the shore back then, which the current owners have completely restored and equipped with modern furniture and appliances. Artistically decorated in a traditional Cycladic style, it is ideal for relaxing with your family or honeymoon. Attentive and friendly owners made sure that guests feel at home. It offers a cozy bedroom with windows overlooking the sea, a spacious living room with a huge flat-screen TV, a kitchen with the necessary appliances and a set of dishes, a bathroom with a shower and a washing machine. The cozy terrace goes directly to the beach and is ideal for a good rest and relaxation. Guests can use beach towels and sun umbrellas for free, and there is a small playground and barbecue area on site.

Useful information

Undoubtedly, the most unusual and exciting experience of staying on Megalo Livadi will be a visit to abandoned mountain mines. They are located in the western part of the bay just a couple of kilometers from the village. A picturesque path leads to the mines along the beach; fantastic views of the bay and the surrounding area open along the road.

For a walk, it is better to choose the evening time when the setting sun paints the rocks in an amazing golden color. At the same time, it is necessary to carefully monitor the time in order to have time to return to the village before dark. At night, it is very dangerous to be in the area – you can fall into the underground cavities formed after the development of the rock.

During the tour, you can visit the mines (it is dangerous to go deep), take a picture against the background of working trolleys and the remains of the rails, admire the dilapidated skeleton of the cargo bridge, which stands out far into the sea.

If you walk a little further from the mine, in the rocks you can find an unusual building with bathtubs filled with reddish water. Once an improvised SPA resort was organized here for workers who, with the help of healing sources, restored their health.

Also noteworthy is the dilapidated building of the mining company's head office, built in 1890 by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller. It is located in the eastern part of the beach and is surrounded by majestic palm trees. Next to it there is a monument to the four miners who died during the suppression of the riot of miners in 1916.
