Boulders beach

The deserted and wild Boulders Beach is located on the Cape Peninsula in the False Bay and is part of the Table Mountain National Park.

Beach description

Boulders Beach consists of several small stone bays surrounded by tall granite mountains. The access to the beach is limited, as the largest colony of African penguins in South Africa lives here.

The first couple of birds were delivered to Boulders Beach in 1982. The penguin population currently stands at 3000, which was helped by the fact that fishing is prohibited in the water area of the bay.

You can watch penguins in their natural habitat from the high wooden platforms installed for the visitors of the reserve. The birds aren't afraid of the tourists watching them, but getting close to them isn't recommended as they might peck you.

When is it better to go

The best time for a beach holiday and swimming on the coast of South Africa falls in the low season – from November to March.  The water temperature in the Indian Ocean rises to + 23-25 °C, in the Atlantic – to + 18-20 °C. The air temperature reaches + 30 °C, but the fresh ocean breeze makes you feel comfortable.
