Beach description
The long and wide coastline is covered with fine white sand. The descent into the water is gentle, the bottom is sandy, the waves are high. Not far from the southern tip of the beach is the crash site of the steamboat Kakapo, which was stuck in the sand due to the captain.
Because of the high waves and cold water, few decide to swim. The beach is suitable for sunbathing, hiking and horseback riding, beach volleyball, relaxing with children. In the village of Nordhuk there is a horse farm where you can rent a horse. The beach is especially popular with surfers, who make up the bulk of vacationers.
Near the beach lies the vast conservation area of Silvermine, which is part of Table Mountain National Park.
You can get to the beach along the scenic Chapman Peak highway, named after the British naval officer, who during the expedition to the shore almost fell behind the ship. The winding highway on the mountain slopes is considered one of the most beautiful sights of South Africa.
When is the best time to go
The best time for a beach holiday and swimming on the coast of South Africa falls in the low season – from November to March. The water temperature in the Indian Ocean rises to + 23-25 °C, in the Atlantic – to + 18-20 °C. The air temperature reaches + 30 °C, but the fresh ocean breeze makes you feel comfortable.
