Camps Bay beach

Camps Bay Beach is located on the Atlantic coast of South Africa at the foot of the majestic mountains called the Twelve Apostles. The Lion Head and Table Mountain rise in the neighborhood.

Beach description

The wide coastline is covered with fine white sand. The descent into the water is smooth, the bottom is sandy-rocky, the water is clear and rather cold. Camps Bay has a high tidal wave. It is dangerous to let the children go swimming on their own, even if they swim well, as a strong current carries swimmers to the coastal cliffs. However, a large pool is cut in the rocks, in which the water is much warmer than in the ocean.

A lot of huge boulders are scattered throughout the territory and in the water, giving a special flavor to the Camps Bay landscape, which is emphasized by the spreading palm trees growing on the shore.

Camps Bay is extremely popular with tourists and locals who gather here to relax and have a picnic on the ocean shore. Waves and ocean wind attract crowds of fans of surfing, yachting, parasailing. On the beach it is comfortable to relax with children over 10 years old, for small tourists it is too noisy and crowded there.

The beach has a developed infrastructure, there is a rental of sunbeds, umbrellas, sun loungers, equipment for water activities. The area is equipped with comfortable benches and tables. Along the coast and along the slopes of the mountains there are restaurants, cafes, bars, night clubs, residential complexes. From the beach begins the funicular to Table Mountain, where there are many entertainment complexes and attractions.

When is it better to go

The best time for a beach holiday and swimming on the coast of South Africa falls in the low season – from November to March.  The water temperature in the Indian Ocean rises to + 23-25 °C, in the Atlantic – to + 18-20 °C. The air temperature reaches + 30 °C, but the fresh ocean breeze makes you feel comfortable.

Infrastructure

Where to stop

In the fashionable Camps Bay area, there are a large number of hotels, apartments and guest houses providing excellent accommodation and impeccable service.

Where to eat

In Cape Town and the suburbs there is no street fast food trade, but you can eat tasty and inexpensive in cafes, bars, supermarkets and large shopping complexes. Many options for quality food and drink can be found in Camps Bay on the waterfront and directly on the beach. Most restaurants in the resort area of Camps Bay have high prices. There are round-the-clock establishments and gourmet restaurants where renowned chefs work. It is worth trying Biltong beef jerky, dry sausages with Droewors coriander, antelope meat.

What to do

Camps Bay is one of the best places for windsurfing and kitesurfing in South Africa. You can find an instructor on the beach and in specialized sports equipment stores. Beginners are better off choosing a beach on the Indian Ocean because Camps Bay has too high waves. Experienced surfers saddle the crests of waves near reefs and rock formations rising above the surface of the ocean.

It is worth visiting the Table Mountain, which offers a stunning view of the city and the ocean stretching below. You can climb the hiking trail or the funicular, which is located on the beach. Only physically prepared people can overcome the pedestrian route. On the slopes of Table Mountain, magnificent forests of endemic species of evergreen trees and shrubs grow. When setting off on a journey, you should dress warmer and put on shoes with good grip, because the route passes through rugged rocky areas, and the top is always windy and cool, even on clear and hot days. Telescopes are mounted on the flat top of the mountain. There is a restaurant and souvenir shops.
