El Haouaria beach

The long white sand beach of El Haouaria, surrounded by villas and restaurants, is a favorite of guests in northeastern Tunisia. The steep cliffs along the rugged coastline and the deep waters of all shades of blue are especially admired by divers and photography enthusiasts. The beach occupies the tip of the Cap Bon Peninsula.

Beach description

Behind the port, a narrow sandy strip is replaced by a series of pristine pebble bays with stunningly clear water. Having retired to one of them, you can listen to the sound of waves without any interference.

The tables of the open terraces of coastal restaurants cascade down to the water's edge. In the evenings, from here you can watch the sun setting in the sea near the island of Zembra. In the spring, this fantastic sight is complemented by another natural attraction. Since El Haouaria is on a bird’s migratory route, from March to May, thousands of birds fly over the beach from Africa to Europe.

Two dozen caves stretch along the rocky coast of El Haouaria. They arose as a result of the extraction by the Carthaginians and Romans of the valuable stone necessary for the implementation of construction projects such as the Colosseum in Rome and the amphitheater in El Jem. Almost all the caves are now fenced, you can’t enter them, but you can wander around the nearest mini-ravines and, if you're lucky, find ancient chisels in them.

When is the best time to go

Tunisia is located in two climatic zones — tropical and subtropical. The swimming season opens in May and lasts until October. During this period, the least amount of precipitation falls, calm weather prevails, the sea is calm, and a storm rarely occurs. In July and August it becomes especially hot. Air temperature exceeds +40°C. In August, it sometimes storms.
