Aspros Gialos beach

The snow-white coast contrasts with the green slope of Mount Niritos and the blue sea. By the way, the latter is remarkable for its amazing clarity and transparency. The shore itself is also clean so you will definitely not find unpleasant surprises in the form of garbage, branches and algae. This beach is rightfully considered to be the pearl of the island with amazing views of the strait between Ithaca and Kefalonia, the eastern coast of which is visible from Aspros Gialos even without binoculars. However, to get to it, you will have to make a long journey from the city of Vatni...

Beach description

The beach of Aspros Gialos is located on the west side of the island. It is also sometimes called Agios Ioannis because there is a village with the same name nearby. Despite the remoteness from the island's capital, there are still many tourists here. It is chosen for the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the local scenery.

The road to Aspros Gialos is paved, down to the small path leading to the beach. You'll still have to walk a little bit in the end. The detour starts from the village of Lefki in northern Ithaca, which then descends to the sea. By the way, there are also less crowded, secluded coves near it, which are accessed by a number of roads leading from the main road, where the path to Aspros Gialos begins.

This is a pebble beach. The pebbles vary in size from large to medium in different parts of the pebbles. The water is very deep, so vacationers with children need to be careful. Although cypresses, olives and shrubs come down from the slopes to the beach, there is no natural shade on the beach, so stock up on sunscreen creams and caps. The cool water is refreshing due to the current and wind. In the morning, the beach is usually quiet, and in the afternoon, it's windy.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

There is a small area on the beach with sun loungers and umbrellas for 10 euros, but there are no other amenities. Tourists who have been here note that it is better to take an umbrella with you, as there are quite a lot of people during the peak season, and there is not enough shade for everyone.

To have a glass of soft drink or have a snack - you have to climb the path above, since there are no shops or cafes on the beach itself. The closest hotel to the beach is Odyssey Apartments. It is 5 km away from the beach. You can find guest houses and villas for rent closer.

There is no organized entertainment. There are not even boats off the coast - for some people it is a plus, but not for another people. If you want to take a trip on the water, you can bring a kayak with paddles with you. You can buy it in Vathy, as well as in other more or less large settlements on the island, or even rent it.
