Skinos beach

Nestled on the picturesque east coast of Ithaca, just two kilometers from the island's capital, lies the serene Skinos Beach. Accessible exclusively by car, visitors can conveniently park along the roadside, shaded by the whispering pine trees. A meandering dirt path, cutting through the lush forest, guides you to the beach. Here, the forest's edge meets a quaint coastal strip adorned with medium-sized pebbles, a soft carpet of pine needles, and scattered fallen cones.

Beach description

Skinos Beach, nestled in the bay of the same name, is shielded by rocky capes from the strong waves and winds. This natural protection makes the beach a favored haven for yachtsmen who appreciate the calm and relatively deep waters of the bay.

The beach is fringed by magnificent pines and cypress trees that stretch down to the water's edge, providing ample shade and releasing the divine scent of pine needles. This natural canopy allows visitors to linger on the beach throughout the day, swimming for hours in the clear, emerald sea and basking in the tranquility.

Unlike more commercialized beaches, Skinos lacks the typical beach infrastructure. Visitors should plan to bring their own food, beverages, and other essentials for a comfortable stay. Many travelers use Skinos as a waypoint en route to the even more picturesque and secluded Gidaki Beach. A winding path meanders through the forest and ascends the mountain, revealing stunning views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. The journey is an easy forty-minute trek, but comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential!

  • Best Time to Visit:

The best time to visit Ithaca for a beach vacation is during the summer months, specifically from June to August. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for enjoying the island's stunning beaches.

    • June: The beginning of summer is ideal for those looking to avoid the peak tourist season while still enjoying warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine.
    • July: As the heart of the tourist season, July offers the warmest weather, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. However, it's also when the beaches are most crowded.
    • August: The end of summer continues to provide excellent beach weather, and as the month progresses, the crowds begin to thin out, making it a great time for a more peaceful beach experience.

Regardless of the month you choose, the summer season in Ithaca is characterized by long, sunny days and the Mediterranean climate's warm, clear waters, making it an ideal destination for a beach vacation.
