Loutsa beach

Most of the coast of Ithaca is notable for its crystal clear and transparent waters, however Loutsa has surpassed in this sense other beaches of the island. He even awarded the Blue Flag, which is the highest recognition of its clear waters. It is located in the pristine, clean basin of the Ionian Sea, where you can spend the whole day soaking in the warm Mediterranean sun.

Beach description

The advantage of this beach, in addition to already mentioned purity of water, is the proximity to the city of Vati (the capital of Ithaca). Taking a bicycle, you can easily reach it in a few minutes. Some people even come here on foot, combining a walk along the Ithaca promenade with swimming on Lutsa beach. Due to its convenient location, it is chosen as a place for families with kids and the elderly.

Although it is located at the entrance to the Vati bay, swimming here is absolutely safe due to the buoys mounted in the coastal waters. A few meters away from the shore, the depth begins, which makes the lovers of full swimming happy, rather than floundering in shallow waters. There are no practically no waves here, they are usually low and rare. The olive trees on the hill descend, almost reaching the sand. There are cemented supports on the two sides of the beach that facilitate access to water.

Unlike most of Ithaca's beaches, Lutsa is a sandy beach with inclusions of smooth white pebbles. Some tourists note this as a disadvantage, as this heterogeneous structure of the coast is uncomfortable when walking. But for families with children - this is a plus. Sand is not much, but enough to make a baby a limb. It's crowded all morning, so it's better to get up early to take a comfortable place.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Useful information

  1. At the end of the beach there is a footpath with which you can get along the beach into a tiny chapel. During the three-mile driveway, get ready to meet peaked bushes. Therefore, we recommend that you go for such a walk in trousers. Moreover, the entrance to the chapel in short clothes is prohibited.
  2. You should try dishes in the taverns, which are the "features" of the cuisine of this particular Greek island. Among them is rovani, the main ingredients of which are round-grain rice and honey, as well as a white bread appetizer seasoned with white cheese, tomatoes and oregano seasoning. Finally, when we talk about seafood, try fried fish with savory marinade. And there is another dish that you are unlikely to try somewhere else or be able to repeat it yourself. This is giouvetsi, pasta, characterized by arbitrary shape and size, baked with pieces of meat.
