Fontana Amorosa beach

Discover the enchanting Blue Lagoon (Fontana Amorosa), a gem nestled within a national park on the Akamas Peninsula. The somewhat challenging access to the Blue Lagoon helps preserve its pristine condition, all under the watchful eye of UNESCO. Moreover, the captivating waters of the Gulf of Amorosa are steeped in mythology, linked to the legendary goddess Aphrodite herself.

Beach description

Fontana Amorosa offers an unconventional beach vista. The largest gulf on the peninsula features a seabed that varies from sandy to rocky, with depths ranging from 3 to 5 meters. The waters are remarkably clear, exhibiting a saturated blue hue. A narrow strip of land along the water's edge is adorned with a blend of pebbles and sand.

Snorkeling and diving are popular activities among tourists who visit this destination. The surrounding rocks are teeming with fish and turtles, while a reef situated a short distance from the shore, along with small rock formations, provides an extensive area for underwater exploration. The beach here retains a predominantly wild and natural character.

Many tourists are drawn to the baths of Aphrodite, and they often journey to Fontana Amorosa on foot from there. A quaint grotto with a fresh spring lies approximately 5.5 km from the Blue Lagoon. Adjacent to it, a vibrant botanical garden thrives, offering a gazebo for relaxation, and inviting paths for leisurely strolls.

The following services and amenities are available to tourists near the bathhouse:

  • Buses connect from the bus stations of nearby settlements.
  • A parking lot is available for convenience.
  • A tourist information center provides assistance.
  • A small shop offers refreshments and snacks.
  • Dining with a view is possible at a nearby restaurant.
  • An observation deck presents stunning vistas.
  • Steps facilitate access to the beach.
  • Sun loungers and umbrellas are available for comfort.

Optimal Visiting Time

The best time to visit Cyprus for a beach vacation is typically between June and September. During these months, the island boasts an ideal climate for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters.

  • June: The beginning of the summer offers warm, but not scorching temperatures, perfect for those who prefer a more comfortable heat. The sea temperature starts to rise, making it pleasant for swimming.
  • July and August: These are the hottest months, with temperatures often soaring above 30°C (86°F). For sun worshippers and those looking to spend most of their time on the beach or in the water, this is the prime time to visit.
  • September: As the summer crowds begin to thin, September provides a more tranquil beach experience. The weather remains warm and the water temperature is still inviting for swimming and water sports.

While the peak summer months offer the quintessential beach vacation, it's worth noting that Cyprus is a year-round destination. For those looking to avoid the heat and crowds, consider visiting in May or October, when the weather is still pleasant and the sea temperature is suitable for swimming.

Infrastructure

Not every tourist will master the independent walking trip to Fontana Amorosa due to the complexity of the route. More vacationers reach this destination as part of an organized excursion or by navigating an all-wheel drive vehicle along a dirt road, flanked by beautiful vistas. Another option is to rent a boat. Even on a small craft, the journey is less exhausting than walking and takes approximately 30 minutes.

In the conservation area where the beach is situated, the erection of structures is prohibited, so the coastline appears entirely untouched from the sea. Only the vibrant hues of boats and yachts add life to the landscape.

The sole hotel within the conservation area was once constructed by the Prime Minister of Cyprus, who was subsequently ousted from office. His misuse of authority was not without consequences.

Staying at Anassa, a 5-star establishment, may be the priciest in Cyprus, but it offers serene seclusion, and you might even encounter a prince from Monaco shuffling in his slippers in the room next door.

The nearest settlements for those not possessing a millionaire's budget are Polis or the village of Lachi. Caprice Spa Kosher Resort, rated at 3.5 stars, is an optimal accommodation choice. This resort and spa boasts an excellent location adjacent to the beach and the airport, complete with its own parking. Guests enjoy comfortable beds, a spa center, and a therapeutic pool, all contributing to a restful stay. Additional amenities include a children's pool, a steam bath, and a cozy pool bar serving kosher, buffet, vegan, and vegetarian dishes. Tourists appreciate the kitchenette and barbecue facilities. Suites on the ground floor feature private lawns.

An old port graces the village, where one can admire the eclectic mix of standard motorboats and opulent sailing yachts. Local taverns and restaurants serve exceptional fresh fish. A lunch featuring barbecue, squid, and wine offers a delightful dining experience at a reasonable cost.

While Anassa presents an exquisite menu, be prepared for a significantly higher price point.
