Chalkos beach

Chalkos is a small but very picturesque beach framed by coastal cliffs, located on the southern outskirts of Kythira, a few kilometers from the village of Kalamos and about 8 km southeast of the island's capital. People come here for the atmosphere of relative solitude from the world with a certain degree of comfort in the bosom of unique landscapes. It is because of this combination of recreational benefits that many consider Chalkos one of the best beaches on the island, despite its small length.

Beach description

Chalkos coast, surrounded by coastal and sea cliffs with underwater grottoes, is undeveloped and has retained its original wild charm, which attracts many visitors. During the season (especially on weekends) it is sometime even difficult to find an empty seat here.

The length of the coast is just 200 m, and those wishing to rest on this beach is much more than the available place. Chalkos is particularly popular due to:

  • calm waters, which is associated with the absence of strong winds due to the protection of cliffs;
  • gentle entry into the water - a significant depth begins a few meters from the shore;
  • very clear and transparent turquoise emerald waters, which, like the coast, are dominated by soft light sand with white and colored pebbles;
  • a scenic bay framed by cliffs, creating a natural shadow shelter from the heat.

The western edge of the beach with its jagged cliff is the most popular place on the coast among the lovers of dramatic photos against the background of the sea and rocks. The eastern edge of Chalkos is also attractive for colorful photos, where higher coastal cliffs impress with an incredible combination of orange and gray shades and emerald green vegetation.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

You can drive to Chalkos beach by car, but to get to the coast you have to leave it in the parking lot and walk for another 500 m, going down the narrow path trodden by tourists.

  • Along the way, you can pay for the rental of sun loungers and straw umbrellas, which will provide the most comfortable pastime on the beach.
  • There is also a cozy cafe and bar on the rocks above the beach where you can have a snack and even order a refreshing mojito.

Most catering establishments (several taverns and bars) are concentrated on the left outskirts of Chalkos, but they work only in the summer. In the summer you can also rent snorkeling equipment. But it is worth considering that there are no toilets and changing cabins on the beach. You can stay relatively nearby in Giannikas Apartments from which the beach is about 4 km.

Useful information

  1. The proximity of the capital of the island allows you to admire its many attractions and interesting places in its vicinity. Therefore, rest on Chalkos should be combined with an exciting excursion program, the saturation of which depends only on the vacationers themselves. You can visit many interesting places here, ranging from the fortress of Chora and the archaeological museum to ancient villages with stone mills in the vicinity, where an authentic atmosphere has been preserved.
  2. You can also visit the former capital of the island - Palaiochora, where 6 ancient architectural monuments, including the Church of St. Barbara, have been preserved. But the most exciting will be a boat trip to the beach of Fyri Ammos - the main competitor of Chalkos in beauty and popularity.
