Fyri Ammos beach

Fyri Ammos is the most unusual beach of Kitira, which has an impressive landscape due to the picturesque faceting of the rocks and the incredible red shade of sand on the shore. It is located on the north-eastern outskirts of the island, about 2 km from the village of Agia Pelagia and almost immediately behind the village of Kalamos. Fantastic views and easy access to the coast gave it the glory of one of the most popular beaches of the island, even in the absence of any signs of infrastructure.

Beach description

If you are looking for a good alternative to the bustling beaches of Agia Pelagia, then Firi Ammos is the best place to go. Narrow, but pretty long beachline, even though it is popular, is rarely crowded with tourists. There is always a secluded area for privacy, especially taking into account the presence of coastal cliffs.

Firi Ammos is especially famous:

  • very clean and incredibly clear waters for which the beach was awarded the Blue Flag;
  • shallow and medium-sized multi-colored pebbles on the sea bottom, which appear to be treasured in the refracting rays of the sun when the water is wonderfully clear;
  • fine sand of unusual red color mixed with pebbles of the same shade on the coast;
  • steep coastal rocky hills of the same reddish shade, which creates an incredible contrast against the background of green vegetation,with which they are partially covered;
  • a small sea cave on the right edge of the beach.

All this creates a trully fantastic landscape with an atmosphere of isolation from the outside world. Due to the coastal hills and cliffs there is almost never windy and there are no high waves. The sea pleases with the very calm waters, the excellent visibility of which allows you to admire the colorful pebbles on the bottom, even at a considerable distance from the shore.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Near the beach there is a parking lot where you can leave a car. Here all the signs of infrastructure end here. Although in summer in the central part of Fyri Ammos there are sometimes sellers of ice cream and drinks, who also rent umbrellas, and in the season there is a tavern.

The nearest cafes and restaurants are located only a few kilometers from this picturesque coast. Therefore, it is best to go to Fyri Ammos in a rented car in order to be able to admire the local views, swim and go to the nearest tavern a couple of kilometers from the coast.

You can stay at the apartment Fyuri Ammos in Agia Pelagia from which a few meters to the beach and about 800 m to the village itself, or at the Maneas Beach hotel in the same village, from where it is a few minutes walk to the coast.
