Suzdal Lakes beach

Suzdal lakes is a picturesque natural area in the Northern part of St. Petersburg and a popular holiday destination for citizens. In Soviet times, a cozy holiday village “Ozerki” was organized there, where the local Bohemia gathered for the summer. Now the territory is actively built up with luxurious mansions of representatives of the already modern elite, who shamelessly protect their possessions with high fences and thus block the access of ordinary citizens to water.

Beach description

Suzdal lakes are a chain of three reservoirs connected by small channels. Verkhnee lake is the most popular among tourists. It is located a five-minute walk from the metro station “Ozerki”. Its length is 600 meters, width is 450.

It is a convenient place for swimming with a great sandy beach surrounded by pine trees. The water depth near the shore is no more than three meters, the safety of visitors is monitored by rescuers. Comfortable swimming areas are fenced with buoys, risk areas are marked with warning signs. The beach is equipped with a toilet, changing rooms, picnic pavilions and shopping tents. It offers water sports, beach volleyball, tennis, boat rental and fishing gear (there are a lot of fish in that lake).

It is very crowded and lively at the height of the summer season and on weekends. There is noise, music shouts. The aroma of pine needles is interrupted by smoke from the fires. Therefore, lovers of a more relaxing holiday prefer the Srednee Lake, where there are less people.

It is little less in size than Verkhnee lake. The coast is hilly and sandy. The bottom is comfortable and safe. There are also lifeguards on duty. Places for swimming are fenced with buoys. A training sports base is next to the beach, where you can learn the basics of windsurfing, wakeboarding and water skiing. It is possible to rent a boat and go fishing

Nizhnee Lake is the largest of the three, its length reaches two kilometers. It is forbidden to swim in it because of the proximity of the Shuvalov cemetery, but it is very pleasant to walk along the shore and admire the sunset. Unfortunately, an impressive part of the territory is given over to uncontrolled development, and the picturesque wild beaches are littered with garbage and household waste, which are left behind by careless “shashlykmakers”.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit the Baltic coast of Russia for a beach vacation is during the summer months, specifically from June to August. This period offers the most favorable weather conditions for enjoying the seaside.

  • June - The beginning of summer brings milder temperatures and longer days, perfect for beach activities and exploring the coastal towns.
  • July - Typically the warmest month, July offers the best chance for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports. The water temperature is also at its most comfortable.
  • August - While still warm, August signals the end of the peak season. Visitors can enjoy the warm weather with fewer crowds, making it ideal for a more relaxed vacation.

It's important to note that the Baltic coast can be quite unpredictable, and even during these months, the weather can change rapidly. Therefore, it's advisable to check the forecast and pack accordingly. Regardless of the month you choose, the Baltic coast's unique charm and beauty are sure to provide a memorable beach vacation.

Infrastructure

The Surroundings of Suzdal lakes are densely built up with country houses, elite cottages and multi-storey residential complexes. Roads lead to all water bodies, in some places you can park your car right on the shore. There are hiking and cycling routes in the wood line. There are sports grounds, ropes course, a club for horse riding.

You can stay in a three-star hotel Sunpark for a few days. It is located right on the shore of Srednee Lake. It offers cozy, quiet rooms with beautiful views, its own restaurant with excellent cuisine, children's play areas, private parking, picnic areas and sports. The main attraction of the hotel is an artificial wave for surfing, organized in the indoor pool on the territory of the complex. In summer, guests can enjoy wakeboarding, windsurfing and water skiing on the lake, with a substantial discount. They will enjoy skiing, snowboarding and skating in winter. The hotel is pet-friendly and offers free Wi-Fi throughout.

Useful information

Despite the fact that Suzdal lakes are one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Northern part of St. Petersburg, the water quality and the environmental situation leaves much to be desired. In 2018, a number of measures were carried out to clean up the lakes and surrounding areas, which, unfortunately, did not have the proper result.

Suzdal lakes did not enter the list of reservoirs safe for swimming again in 2019. The main cause of pollution of the water area is uncontrolled development of the coastal area, which was given to private business. In the pursuit of profit, merchants do not pay attention to the ecological state of the Suzdal lakes, which, if you do not take urgent measures, will soon face a very sad fate.
