Mastichari beach

Mastichari Beach, nestled in the northwest of Kos, lies a mere 22 kilometers from the island's vibrant capital. This idyllic haven beckons travelers with its pristine white sands, the mesmerizing turquoise hues of the Aegean Sea, and an ambiance of tranquility that's just far enough from the hustle of roads and the hum of Kos International Airport to offer a serene escape.

Beach description

Located in the village bearing the same name, Mastichari has evolved in recent years into a bona fide tourist resort. Along the beachfront of Mastichari on the Aegean Sea's coast, to the left of the pier, travelers can expect pristine conditions, both on the pavement and in the sea water, as well as the following amenities:

  • Changing rooms: Facilities are available for visitors to change their attire;
  • Sunbeds and umbrellas: These are available for rent, providing comfort and shade;
  • Kite and windsurfing schools: Enthusiasts of these sports can enjoy winds that create waves up to 1.5 meters. When it's particularly windy, seaweed may wash ashore, leaving the sea water crystal clear;
  • Water activities: Options include catamarans, diving, and water skiing;
  • Tavern: A haven for those looking to satiate their hunger.

The beach boasts considerable width and length, segmented by dunes and tufts of grass into secluded areas of approximately 50 meters each. The gentle slope into the sea is particularly family-friendly, ideal for children's safe bathing. The seabed is predominantly fine sand, with only the occasional stone when entering the water. Those seeking privacy and tranquility can wander along the coast to more secluded spots, nestled among olive trees.

Locals flock to Mastichari for day trips to bask in the sea's gentle embrace, soak up the warm sun, and witness the mesmerizing sunset. Come evening, they indulge in a meal at their chosen tavern, accompanied by a glass of chilled local wine.

A short distance from Mastichari Beach lies the immaculate Lido Waterpark. It is a particular favorite among children who visit with their families.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Kos for a beach vacation is during the late spring to early autumn months, when the weather is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the island's natural beauty.

  • Late Spring (May to June): This period is perfect for visitors who prefer a quieter vacation with fewer crowds. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea temperature begins to rise, making it comfortable for swimming. The island's flora is also in full bloom, adding to the scenic beauty.
  • High Summer (July to August): These are the hottest months, with temperatures often soaring above 30°C (86°F). This is the peak season for tourists, so expect crowded beaches and vibrant nightlife. The warm sea and the bustling atmosphere make it a great time for those seeking a lively holiday experience.
  • Early Autumn (September to October): The temperatures start to cool down, but the sea remains warm enough for swimming. This period offers a good balance between the hot summer and the mild winter, with fewer tourists and a more relaxed environment. It's an excellent time for those who enjoy a peaceful beach experience with ample sunshine.

Regardless of the time you choose, Kos's stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters provide a memorable vacation. Just remember to book accommodations in advance, especially if you're planning to visit during the high season.

Useful information

The peaceful setting on the beach is comfortable for children. Soft sand, convenient descent into the sea water and small waves allow boys and girls to swim without fear. Riding on "bananas" and slides for kids will delight young tourists. There are good municipal playgrounds near Mastichari.

It is worth considering that sand under the sun heats up very much during the day. Therefore, so as not to hurt to step on it, you need to take comfortable shoes with you. Those who did not do this are better off walking along the beach along wooden paths.

To save on food, you should choose a tavern or restaurant located in the depths of the village. Prices there are much lower than those that are located at the beginning of the walk.
