Plai Laem beach

Plai Laem Beach is located in the North-Eastern part of Koh Samui near the airport. It is an ideal place for those who prefer privacy.

Beach description

The coastline is about 2.5 km long and 5 to 20 m wide and is covered with light sand mixed with pebbles, shells, coral fragments, household garbage. Almost the whole territory is covered with fine and dense sand. The descent is smooth. The bottom is covered with mud and stones. Sea urchins can get under the feet. Water is calm, muddy, because of the shallowness it's difficult to swim. At low tide, the water recedes for a long distance, exposing the unsightly bottom.

Beach is always half-empty. There are two piers where boats and boats are moored. People can rent a kayak or go out to sea with fishermen. No beach infrastructure. No restaurants, bars, showers and cafes. Not far away there is a modern resort with well-furnished area, but sun loungers and umbrellas are provided only for guests.

On the small depth in 100m is a coral reef which is very interesting for snorkelers. From the airport to Plai Laem tourists can get by rented car. Tuk-tuks and other forms of public transport do not go in this direction.

When is it better to go

The period from November to March is considered the high season in Thailand. Comfortable air temperature, as well as minimal rainfall create optimal conditions for a beach holiday.

Useful information

Not far from the beach is the temple complex Wat Plai-Laem, which is called the Temple of the Many-armed Buddha. Most of the complex's structures are located on pontoons on a lake teeming with fish and turtles. In the center of the exhibition is a temple with a golden statue of the Big Buddha. On the left there is a huge statue of Laughing Buddha, which belly people usually rub to attract luck, on the right there is a huge figure of 18-handed Goddess of mercy Guan Yin.
