Molivos beach

Molyvos Beach, also known as Mithymna, graces the northern shores of Lesbos, adjacent to the eponymous town. Legend has it that Mithymna was named after one of the daughters of Makareus, the ancient king of Lesbos. The name Molyvos emerged later, during the Byzantine era. A mere three kilometers from the charming city of Petra and approximately sixty kilometers from Mytilene, the island's bustling capital, Molyvos Beach is a magnet for vacationers. Each year, the resort beckons a multitude of visitors to Greece, drawn by its tranquil harbor, breathtaking scenery, and the rich tapestry of attractions in its vicinity.

Beach description

The shoreline of Molivos is narrow yet remarkably extended. The beach is adorned with pebbles, transitioning to sand near Psinar Bay. The gentle descent and the accommodating sea bottom make it ideal for tourists with children. The beach, having been honored with the Blue Flag, boasts well-appointed sunbeds and canopies, alongside sports playgrounds.

Those who prefer a more "wild" retreat and solitude will find solace among the large boulders on the beach's left flank. However, do bring slippers to protect your feet from the sea urchins that dwell there.

Tourists have access to a plethora of sea attractions, the option to rent boats or yachts, and the opportunity to explore a diving center. The wind season, beckoning windsurfing aficionados, commences in mid-August.

Despite its popularity, Molivos effortlessly accommodates visitors with ample parking. You may park your vehicle in the village or at the parking lot situated above the bay, which is connected by a steep, narrow road.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Lesbos for a beach vacation is during the late spring to early autumn months, when the weather is most conducive for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the island's natural beauty.

  • Late Spring (May to June): This period is ideal for those who prefer a quieter vacation with fewer tourists. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea has begun to heat up, making it comfortable for swimming. The island's flora is in full bloom, adding to the scenic beauty.
  • Summer (July to August): These are the hottest months, perfect for beach lovers and sun seekers. The island becomes more vibrant with tourists, and all beach facilities, including tavernas and water sports, are fully operational. However, be prepared for higher temperatures and busier beaches.
  • Early Autumn (September to early October): This is a great time for those looking for a balance between good weather and fewer crowds. The sea remains warm from the summer heat, and the temperatures are comfortable, not too hot nor too cold, making it perfect for beach activities and exploring the island.

Regardless of the time you choose, Lesbos offers a rich cultural experience, stunning landscapes, and beautiful beaches that make for an unforgettable beach vacation.
