Alankuda beach

Alankuda is a wide long beach on the Kalpitiya peninsula in the northwest of Sri Lanka that stretches for several kilometers along the fisherman settlement of the same name. It's especially popular among extreme water sports enthusiasts and ecotourists. Dolphins can be encountered here all year long due to the warm waters, and they make the boat tours here very popular.

Beach description

Kitesurfers also frequently visit Alankuda thanks to the constant strong wind that allows for great kitesurfing. Windmills - the peculiar sight of the local beach landscape - also tell of great wind conditions. It's no wonder that this place is one of the most popular kitesurfing spots on Kalpitiya.

The untouched nature and isolation from noisy resorts make this beach one of the best places to experience solitude. The coast and the sea bottom are sandy, and the descent into water is smooth. Colorful gazebos with wooden benches are installed here. The best way to get here is from Colombo to Palaviya, and then taking a bus from Palaviya here. All in all takes about 3,5 hours. Also worth visiting are the historical city of Kalpitiya and the fisherman town Negombo.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to travel to Sri Lanka is the period from November to April, when the weather is dry. In summer, the rainy season takes place in Sri Lanka, however, the prices this season are much lower. So if you are not afraid of rainfalls (which commonly take place at night, and by morning the ground dries up), a trip in the summer can be a great option for a budget holiday.
