Polhena beach

If you're in search of the most serene beach in Sri Lanka, where strong winds, towering waves, throngs of tourists, and persistent shopkeepers peddling trinkets on the sand are absent, then your search ends here! However, this doesn't imply that the beach is deserted or lacks visitors. It is quite popular, but primarily with locals and occasional passersby. Therefore, be prepared to stand out, as tourists are a rare sight at Polhena Beach.

Beach description

Welcome to Polhena Beach, a serene paradise nestled just 2 km from the bustling center of Matara. This idyllic spot is a haven of untouched tropics, perfectly suited for:

  • Families with children, thanks to the protective corals that create a shallow and tranquil coastal area, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for the little ones.
  • Couples seeking a romantic getaway, who will find the peaceful and picturesque setting ideal for a honeymoon immersed in the beauty of the heavenly tropics.

The allure of Polhena Beach lies in its pristine golden sands and the crystal-clear, azure waters that invite you to dive in. The sea bottom is smooth and even, creating the perfect conditions for a leisurely swim. Here, the absence of surfers and a party atmosphere is a testament to the tranquility of the area. The natural pool, shielded from the Indian Ocean by a coral reef, is a sanctuary from powerful waves, allowing only gentle waters to grace its shores.

At Polhena Beach, safety is a priority, ensuring swimmers of all skill levels can enjoy the water with peace of mind. The shallow, sandy sea bottom is free from stones and corals - provided you steer clear of the reef. While the beach remains a tranquil retreat during weekdays, the weekends come alive with the vibrant spirit of local visitors.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Sri Lanka for a beach vacation largely depends on which part of the island you're planning to explore. Sri Lanka's beaches are at their best during two distinct periods, thanks to the island's two monsoon seasons affecting opposite coasts at different times of the year.

  • West and South Coasts: The ideal time to visit beaches on the west and south coasts is from November to April. During these months, the weather is dry and sunny, providing perfect conditions for beach activities and relaxation. Destinations like Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Bentota are particularly enjoyable.
  • East Coast: For the east coast beaches, such as Trincomalee, Arugam Bay, and Passikudah, the best time is between May to September. This period avoids the Yala monsoon, which affects the southwest of the island, ensuring that visitors to the east coast can enjoy clear skies and calm seas.

Regardless of the coast, it's always advisable to check the weather forecast and local advice as climate patterns can vary. By choosing the right time for your visit, you'll be rewarded with Sri Lanka's stunning beaches at their most inviting.

Infrastructure

The shopping scene is quite developed here, with mobile stalls providing the essentials - underwater goggles, water toys, towels, and light snacks. However, for a wider selection of food, it's advisable to shop in Matara. The beach boasts snorkeling and diving sessions with an instructor, as well as surfing lessons for novices. Seasoned surfers may find the waves less challenging.

In terms of amenities, there are changing rooms and toilets for your convenience. Interestingly, sunbeds and umbrellas are not available for rent. This could be because the dense palm foliage casts ample natural shade along the coast, and the sand is so fine that the need for a sunbed is virtually nonexistent.

Polhena's beachfront is dotted with picturesque restaurants and hotels, including the Polhena Village Beach Resort. Souvenir shops abound, offering unique items that capture the essence of this idyllic location. Local beachside eateries extend the warmest Sri Lankan hospitality, serving up delectable gourmet dishes and refreshing beverages.

Useful information

  1. The main "feature" of this place are the turtles. They live their life seamlessly and are not afraid of people. You can bear witness to the egg laying process or swim with these animals near the shore.
  2. Crow Island that adds even more romantic mood and fantasy to the local aesthetic is located across the beach.
  3. Note that the locals swim in their clothes. If you want to wear a swimsuit, you can either find a spot far from them or come here during weekdays when the beach is mostly empty. And if you leave the beach area you need to stay clothed even more, as walking with bare body parts isn't accepted here. Don't shock locals that have established traditions
