Passekudah beach

Passekudah is a long sandy beach located in the sickle-shaped bay of the same name in the east of Sri Lanka, 35 km north from Batticaloa. This beach, covered in clean grainy light sand, is considered to be the most beautiful in the region. Visitors are attracted by the excellent conditions for safe swimming - calmest water and flat sea bottom.

Beach description

Due to its length, the beach is half-empty most of the time and is therefore perfect for couples and families with children. The descent is very smooth, and shallow water remains even 200-400 m away from the shore, which makes Passekudah one of the shallowest ocean beaches of Sri Lanka. The coast is protected from high ocean waves by reefs.

Sunsets look amazing on this beach. But do note that the infrastructure here is very underdeveloped here. The Kalkudah Beach located 2 km away from Passekudah is even emptier, but still worth visiting. Windsurfers usually come here in September, when the weather is very windy and creates high waves. The easiest way to get to both of these beaches is from Valaichchenai in Batticaloa region.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to travel to Sri Lanka is the period from November to April, when the weather is dry. In summer, the rainy season takes place in Sri Lanka, however, the prices this season are much lower. So if you are not afraid of rainfalls (which commonly take place at night, and by morning the ground dries up), a trip in the summer can be a great option for a budget holiday.
