Kirinda beach

Kirinda is a 3km long sandy beach in the south of Sri Lanka located near a fisherman village of the same name near a Buddhist stupa. High waves and picturesque reefs attract extreme surfing and underwater swimming enthusiasts here. The beautiful beach covered in light golden sand and giant boulders on the coast is also a great place for unique photo shoots and long walks along the shoreline.

Beach description

Despite its features, Kirinda is almost never crowded. High waves that attract experienced surfers can be encountered for the majority of a year. The waves are calm from March to the middle of April. This period attracts divers that want an opportunity to explore reefs and watch their unique dwellers, like the harmless grey reef sharks.

Sights worth visiting near the beach include the Buddhist temple on the coastal mountains and the ancient lighthouse built in 1860 that survived the tsunami of 2004. A giant statue of Viharamahadevi - who, according to legends, sacrificed herself to the oceans but had Gods' mercy - can be seen near the temple. You might as well visit the Yala National Park if you go to Kirinda Beach.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to travel to Sri Lanka is the period from November to April, when the weather is dry. In summer, the rainy season takes place in Sri Lanka, however, the prices this season are much lower. So if you are not afraid of rainfalls (which commonly take place at night, and by morning the ground dries up), a trip in the summer can be a great option for a budget holiday.
