Weligama beach
The bay suits those who like surfing, as well as those who like deep sea fishing. Both beginners and experienced people can partake in sports here. Sailing and canoe rides are also available on this beach. And dedicated fishermen who sit along the coastline all day deserve special attention. As they are a sort of a local sight, just like the needlewomen on the shore and the old villas.

You can get here from Colombo by car, train or bus. The beach is located 144 km to the south of the city. The best period to visit is from October to April. During this period it's also possible to catch whale watching tours or visit the old ford where a spa resort, shops and a restaurant are located alongside historical sights. Gastronomical tourists also have some places to visit, like the local tea manor. Yoga enthusiasts can partake in their beloved activity on the beach with instructors.
Despite the fact that this was considered a poor fisherman village in the past, today Weligama can be called a very comfortable place. It's quite popular among foreign tourists who are attracted by the clean beach, magnificent palms, turquoise water and hotels that vary in prices.
When is the best time to go?
The best time to travel to Sri Lanka is the period from November to April, when the weather is dry. In summer, the rainy season takes place in Sri Lanka, however, the prices this season are much lower. So if you are not afraid of rainfalls (which commonly take place at night, and by morning the ground dries up), a trip in the summer can be a great option for a budget holiday.
