Gyeongpo beach

Gyeongpo beach (경포 해변) is a large and beautiful beach located 2 hours from Seoul – between the east coast of the Sea of Japan and Gyeongpoho Lake. Local residents and foreign tourists come here all year round to admire the picturesque sunrise or moon over the ocean, wild roses, take magnificent photos, see ancient buildings and other local relics, indulge in a classic beach holiday.

Beach description

Gyeongpo beach is a coastal strip about 6 km long, almost 1/3 covered with fine white sand and surrounded by 4 km of pine forest. This is the largest public beach on the east coast of South Korea and the third most visited. In season, it seats up to 15,000 visitors daily.

The sea in the area of the beach is quite deep and sometimes hectic, so when swimming, you need to be careful. For the same reason, the beach is not very suitable for families with small children. The entrance to the sea is sometimes steep, the bottom is sandy, sea water is very clean and transparent.

On the beach there are:

  • the rescue service;
  • rental of beach equipment and tents;
  • attractions;
  • shower stalls and changing cabins;
  • free parking;
  • Beach volleyball courts.

Along the coast there is a wooden flooring in the form of a long path along which you can walk along the sea. Tired of walking, you can rest in a coastal cafe, restaurant or bar, which serves Korean seafood – crabs, shellfish, shrimp. In some cafes, visitors, having eaten, can even lie in a hammock, admiring the sea.

Getting to Gyeongpo beach is easy by car or bus from Gangneung, as well as the country's capital, Seoul.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to travel to Korea comes in spring or fall. In the summer it is too hot in Korea, besides the air humidity reaches 80%, which cannot but intensify the negative effect of high temperature. But in spring and autumn the weather is warm, but still cool enough for a comfortable stay.

Infrastructure

From beach activities, visitors to Gyeongpo beach are invited to ride:

  • on jet skis
  • on water bananas;
  • on inflatable rafts;
  • in balloons.

On days when it is cloudy and impossible to swim at sea, vacationers can ride bicycles or take walks around Gyeongpoho Lake. Outdoor enthusiasts can take part in sea fishing by renting a fishing boat.

In the evening, a stage is set for the performance of visiting artists on the beach; fireworks are often launched. Often at Gyeongpo beach in the evening there are even more visitors than during the day.

To spend the night or even stay for a few days near the beach will not be a problem. There are many hotels and hotels of different levels, there is a camp for up to 500 people. Useful information

While resting on Gyeongpo beach, tourists have the opportunity to visit:

  • ancient monuments – Gyeongpodae and Ojukheon;
  • Seoraksan National Park, where about 2,000 animals and 1,400 rare plants live under UNESCO protection. There are also interesting caves with stalactites and cave corals.

In season, beach festivals are held at Gyeongpo beach, such as the Lotus Blossom Festival or Summer Beach Festival, beach dance competitions and other cultural and entertainment events. In spring, people come here to visit the Festival of Blooming Cherry. In winter, the Snow Festival is held here, the participants of which can ride a snowmobile or sled.
