Sipadan Island beach

The legendary Jacques Cousteau once described Sipadan as an "untouched piece of art," and Rodale's Scuba Diving magazine has ranked this island among the top three dive sites in the world. Nestled off the east coast of Sabah, Sipadan Island is a natural marvel, formed by living corals thriving atop an extinct volcanic cone. Situated in the vibrant heart of the Indo-Pacific Basin, the island boasts a rich biodiversity, being home to more than 400 species of fish and a myriad of coral species.

Beach description

A small island that you can circumnavigate in just 25 minutes is brimming with wonders. Diving or snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the Sulawesi Sea - with visibility up to 50 meters - will reward you with encounters with green turtles (which mate and nest here), schools of barracudas, pilot fish, and parrotfish. Manta rays - often referred to as "sea devils" - eagle rays, hammerhead sharks, and whale sharks also grace the Sipadan lagoon with their presence.

At the base of the island lies the "turtle tomb," an underwater limestone cave. Within its labyrinths, numerous skeletons of turtles that failed to find their way back to the surface can be found. The lush vegetation of Sipadan is a sanctuary for a variety of tropical birds, including kingfishers, sunbirds, and wild pigeons. Exotic crustaceans, such as the coconut crab, roam the pristine white sandy beaches.

The hotels on the protected island have been closed to minimize the environmental impact of tourism. Visitors stay in the nearby town of Semporna while awaiting diving permits, which are limited to 120 per day. From there, a boat transports them to the island of Mabul - the gateway to exploration.
