Afandou beach

Afandou Beach in Rhodes, Greece, presents a unique case where tranquility takes a back seat to vibrant activity. The beach's terrain significantly influences its suitability for swimming, which may be seen as a drawback by those seeking calm waters. However, it's important to remember that Afandou's impressive length ensures ample space for all visitors. Whether you're looking to engage in lively beach sports or simply bask in the sun, you'll find a spot on this expansive stretch of sand.

Beach description

If you're planning to bask in the sun and sunbathe under the warm rays of the Greek sun, Afandou Beach in Rhodes may not be the typical sandy retreat you're envisioning. Instead of a sandy shore, you'll find a pebble-covered coastline, and the descent into the water can be somewhat uneven. The wind often picks up, and the water tends to be cool. However, these conditions don't deter enthusiasts from enjoying an array of active pursuits. The water is crystal clear, and the distant, picturesque rocks add to the scenic beauty. Despite its size, the beach remains relatively uncrowded, even at the height of the tourist season. Locals, aware of the beach's unique appeal, have prepared a plethora of sports entertainment options. As you drive along the coast, you'll discover activities to suit every taste: from diving and surfing to golf, and much more.

Consequently, Afandou Beach is particularly well-suited for those seeking adventure:

  • The entire stretch of the beach is covered with pebbles, making it challenging to walk barefoot or even in flip-flops or sandals.
  • While the water is exceptionally clean, it may not be ideal for swimming due to its cooler temperature compared to other areas.
  • The seabed features abrupt changes in depth, which could pose a risk to non-swimmers or children who may not notice the sudden drop-offs.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Rhodes for a beach vacation is during the late spring to early autumn period, specifically from May to October. This timeframe offers the optimal balance of warm weather, sunny skies, and comfortable sea temperatures for beach activities.

  • May to June: These months mark the beginning of the tourist season, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. The sea might still be a bit cool for some, but the weather is generally ideal for those who prefer a more tranquil beach experience.
  • July to August: This is the peak season for Rhodes, characterized by hot temperatures and bustling beaches. It's the perfect time for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the vibrant island life. However, be prepared for higher prices and more tourists.
  • September to October: The end of the high season brings milder temperatures and a more relaxed atmosphere. The sea remains warm enough for swimming, making it an excellent time for those seeking a quieter beach holiday.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation in Rhodes depends on your preferences for weather, water activities, and crowd levels. Each period offers a unique experience, so consider what matters most to you when planning your trip.

Infrastructure

An important road runs along the beach, where there are many places to eat at unusually low prices. The array of services available for those eager to challenge themselves is impressive; I believe everyone will find something special. Try surfing, water skiing, or perhaps diving. However, those seeking a more relaxed vacation might not find what they're looking for; for water activities, the beaches of Tsambika and Lindos are far superior.

In the city center, a couple of kilometers inland, you can find several hotels to suit any budget. At the four-star Lippia Hotel and Golf Resort, there is a vast outdoor swimming pool with water slides, alongside a smaller one for young children. The rooms are tastefully furnished and equipped with all the essentials. Golden Days Hotel offers more modest accommodations, yet it is no less inviting. Hotel Stamos is a stylish hotel in the eastern part of the city, providing upscale service for relatively little money.

Useful information

  1. The vegetation along the coast is very poor, you may have to rent a sunbed with an umbrella. A pleasant breeze will not allow it to overheat, but it will not be able to protect the skin from the sun.
  2. There’s nothing to do with the children. There are not many children's attractions, sharp pebbles and cold water most likely will not please the child.
  3. At local taverns, they often organize nightly music events. To maintain the spirit and have a good time, it’s worth stopping by at least once.
  4. For a change, you should visit the small church of the Virgin Mary in the center of Afandou village.
