Vlychada beach

The most picturesque beach of Santorini

Discover Vlychada, a sprawling beach adorned with gray volcanic sand that visitors fondly refer to as "Martian." This nickname stems from the breathtakingly scenic cliffs that tower above the beach, their surfaces sculpted by centuries of relentless waves and winds. The striking interplay of these majestic cliffs with the gray-black sand crafts a stunning panorama, beckoning travelers to its unique shores. It's no surprise that Vlychada is hailed as the most picturesque beach on the island.

Beach description

The Vlychada Beach is located at the southernmost tip of the island, approximately 11 km from Thera, and is relatively close to Perivolos, near a quaint village sharing its name.

This serene haven attracts a modest number of visitors and is encircled by towering beige cliffs that create a natural barrier between the beach and the rest of the island. The cliffs, sculpted by the relentless forces of erosion, wind, and waves, boast intricate patterns that resemble the brushstrokes of an abstract artist or the unfinished masterpiece of a gifted sculptor. Within these formations, nature has carved an array of unique caves, grottos, columns, and pillars.

The beach itself is a tapestry of sandy stretches interspersed with pebbly areas. The pebbles, a sporadic feature, are entwined with grains of black and gray sand. Spanning approximately 2.5 km, the shoreline is somewhat narrow, but the glistening sand under the bright sun creates a breathtaking spectacle. For those seeking privacy, nudist zones can be found in the more secluded sections of the beach.

The gentle slope of the beach, the gradual increase in water depth, and the sandy seabed, coupled with the crystal-clear waters, render Vlychada Beach an enticing destination for beachgoers. However, visitors should be mindful of the southern winds, which are common in the area and can whip up formidable waves. Additionally, the ease of water entry varies along the shoreline.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Santorini for a beach vacation is typically between late May and early October. During this period, the weather is warm, and the Aegean Sea is perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

  • Late May to June: This is the ideal time for those who prefer a quieter vacation, as the summer crowds have not yet arrived. The weather is pleasantly warm, and the sea has started to heat up, making it comfortable for swimming.
  • July to August: These are the busiest months, with peak tourist season in full swing. The weather is hot, and the beaches are at their most vibrant. However, be prepared for higher prices and more crowded spaces.
  • September: As the summer winds down, September offers a great balance with fewer tourists and still-warm weather. The sea remains warm from the summer heat, providing excellent conditions for water activities.
  • Early October: For those looking to catch the last of the summer weather, early October can still offer sunny days suitable for beach outings, though the evenings start to cool, and there's a higher chance of windy conditions.

Ultimately, the best time for a beach vacation in Santorini depends on your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and prices. Each part of the season offers a unique experience on this beautiful Greek island.

Infrastructure

Relaxation here is optimal from July to September. As the beach is ensconced by cliffs, there are fewer hotels, and consequently, vacationers are less numerous than on other black beaches of the island.

Regarding accommodation:

  • In the southern part of the beach, within the village, there are several quaint hotels. Infrastructure is primarily developed in their vicinity. At Agroktima Chios, you will enjoy comfortable rooms and a pool with sea views. A short walk from the beach, Ai Yannis Suites & Apartments Hotel offers a vibrant atmosphere and the beauty of its garden and park area, making the distance worthwhile.
  • Near the hotels, you can rent sun loungers and parasols. The rest of the beach offers a more secluded vacation experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in pristine nature with minimal signs of civilization.
  • However, for a more vibrant stay on the island, it is advisable to find accommodation in a livelier area and visit this beach by rented car to savor the tranquility it offers.

There are limited sunbeds, available only at the beach's entrance. Yet, the most scenic cliffs are further away. Therefore, most visitors prefer to relax on their towels, enjoying the beach's natural beauty.

While there are no special offers for water activities, people flock here for a peaceful, quiet, and private retreat. For more entertainment and amenities, the bustling beaches of Perissa and Kamari are recommended.

A few taverns and kiosks are situated near the beach, where you can purchase water and snacks. At the beach's entrance, there is a bar offering drinks and sandwiches. Additional taverns are nestled within the village.

Useful information

  1. From the capital bus station you can get by direct bus to Vlychad. The time is 15-20 minutes.
  2. At the very beginning of the beach there is a pipe of a plant that is already idle and has become a peculiar attraction of these places. The only focus of “civilization” on Vlychada beach is the embankment with fishing boats, which includes sightseeing boats.
  3. On the undulating rocky surfaces of the rocks, it is especially interesting to observe a bizarre interaction in the play of light and shadows. Therefore, it is recommended to visit here at least once in the early morning or at sunset. The spectacle is truly impressive and unforgettable.
  4. Although the rocks seem very fragile in appearance, they are actually very dense. The probability of collapse here is much less than on the equally fantastic beach Red.
  5. Since the beach is far removed from the main attractions of the island, there is almost never a lot of people here.
