Emporios Mavros Gialos beach

Emporios Mavros Gialos (Emporios Mavros Gialos) is the most picturesque beach of Chios, which is also called black or Mavra Volia ("Black Glass") for the unusual color of pebble and sand on its coast. It is located on the southwestern edge of the island, about 28 km west of the city of Chios, just 5 km from the ancient village of Pirgi and in the vicinity of the port village of Emporios, which is reflected in its name. This unusual coastline attracts lovers of exotic beach landscapes and diving enthusiasts.

Beach description

The beach of Mavros Gialos unites three scenic bays surrounded by steep hills. Unusual and attractive landscapes of the coast are the result of the former activity of the long extinct volcano Psaronas. It was its ancient activity caused by the appearence of fine black pebbles with a small fraction of the same coloring of coarse-grained sand, which are so contrasting against the background of dark turquoise blue sea waters.

The coastal cliffs complement the scenic landscape, acquiring in the rays of the sun amazing orange shade, which looks beautiful against the background of emerald coloring of grass and shrubs on the slopes. Wet black pebbles seem to be jewels scattered on the shore by ancient Greek gods. In addition to the colorful landscapes can be highlighted several other features of the beach, which attract tourists here:

  • crystal clear waters are pretty cool even in hot summer;
  • stony sea bottom with predominant pebbles, making it seem incredibly black through the pure water column;
  • due to the excellent visibility under water, snorkeling and diving are unforgettable experience and a colorful impressions.

The beach is rather long, so it is easy to find an empty space even in the summer season. Despite the poorly developed infrastructure, this picturesque coast is very popular among vacationers. Although it is not too crowded even during the season, it gives the beach an atmosphere of tranquillity and makes it an ideal place for those who like privacy.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

The beach is famous for its picturesque views, but the infrastructure here is almost not developed. It is worth considering that there is no rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, and the coast is not controlled by rescuers. But on the beach there are showers and changing cabins.

On the outskirts of the beach there is a kiosk selling sandwiches, coffee and ice cream. More catering establishments in the form of traditional taverns with fish cuisine can be found in Emporios Port.

Emporio apartments are available for rent in Emporios village. Several cafes and taverns serving seafood dishes are located nearby. Another option is to stay in the budget hotel Emporios Bay Hotel.
