Komi beach

Located on the southeast coast of Chios, four kilometers from the village of Kalamoti. This is one of the most popular beaches of Chios due to the soft sandy shore and the turquoise sea, warm and relatively shallow. You can get from the capital of the island by car or by bus, the journey takes about an hour. It is worth considering that Komi is a rather lively place, and in high season crowds of tourists come here. Therefore, lovers of a quiet measured rest should find another place or choose a different time for the trip.

Beach description

The beach is long and quiet enough, covered with soft golden sand and surrounded by dense vegetation. The sea is relatively shallow and calm, with a smooth entrance and sandy bottom. The water is not as transparent as on the pebbles beach, so snorkelers will have to put away their masks and fins for a while. But children and young people will like the beach - there are a lot of various water attractions, sports grounds and children's playgrounds.

On the beach you can ride a banana and chestnut, go windsurfing and sup boarding, rent a jet ski or canoe and even fly with a parachute. Inflatable pontoons with slides are installed for children near the shore, and the safe "paddling pool" is organized for the smallest one in shallow water.

Order and safety are monitored by rescuers from special towers, there is a first aid station and a room for mother and child. The beach is equipped with umbrellas and sun loungers, toilets, showers and changing cabins. There are comfortable matting tracks to the sea, and a flat wooden platform with a convenient entrance to the sea is equipped for wheelchair users.

Along the shore there are numerous beach bars and taverns where you can not only satisfy your hunger and thirst, but also listen to music and dance. In the evenings, the beache becomes a lively youth gathering and sports and music festivals are often held here.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Useful information

The southern part of Chios is famous for its unique groves of mastic trees whose bark exudes fragrant resin when notched. It solidifies in the form of transparent drops and has a pleasant coniferous-camphor taste. From this resin, sweet mastic is made in the form of chewing sweets, and they are also added to the composition of local alcohol, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Entire villages (mastichochory), whose inhabitants are engaged in this craft, have survived to this day. Some of them are located just a few kilometers from Komi - the route through the "mastic" places can be found at the local tour desk.

To the south of Komi, a fifteen-minute drive away, there is the resort town of Emporios, famous for its seaport and well-preserved Acropolis, whose age dates back to the 9th century BC. You should also visit the famous Mavra Volia beach, covered with unique black pebbles formed after the eruption of the volcano.
