Glaroi beach

Located on the east coast of Chios, only nine kilometers from the island’s capital. Its name is translated from Greek as “seagull” due to the large colonies of seabirds who have chosen the rocky shores of the bay for a permanent shelter. A convenient asphalt road leads to the beach, so you can easily get to Glory by car, bike or scooter. Parking usually does not accommodate everyone, especially in the high season, so transport is usually left right on the side of the road. A dirt path leads from the road to the beach, offering breathtaking views of the harbor and bay.

Beach description

The beach is lurking in a small cozy bay, protected on all sides by coastal cliffs. The shore is sandy, like the sea bottom, the entrance to the water is gentle and safe. The sea is slightly colder than on the other beaches of the east coast due to the fresh water spring, which originates high in the mountains and flows into the sea in the surroundings of the beach.

The central part is equipped with umbrellas and sun loungers, there are toilets, showers, changing cabins and lockers for personal items. On the edges, among stone boulders, snorkelers, divers and nudists are usually placed. The beach has kayaks, canoes and boards for sup boarding, jet skiing and water skiing.

The main attraction on Glaroy is the bar on the beach, around which a noisy youth party is going to take place. Therefore, lovers of quiet, measured rest should come here early in the morning or choose a low season to visit this place. In July and August, the beach resembles a busy anthill, where you won't even find a place to put a towel by lunch. Nevertheless, it enjoys great popularity among tourists and islanders and is rightly among the top ten beaches of Chios.

Glaroy is one of the most popular and scenic beaches of the island. Tourists are attracted by its convenient location, rocky shores and crystal clear sea of emerald shade. In recent years, the beach has become a venue for music concerts and fashionable youth parties, so it is not suitable for mature couples and families with children. Music rumbles from morning till late at night and the beach bar is full of lively party life.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Useful information

Tourists staying in Vrontados have the opportunity to explore the entire east coast of Chios, taking a modern highway towards Kardamilla. On the way, you can see the rock of Homer, where the great poet, according to legend, was engaged with his students. A little higher is the famous Mersinidi Monastery, one of the island's main shrines. Until now, the ships passing nearby give a beep, thus greeting the Virgin Mary and her servants.

The small bay between Vrontados and Lagada is full of abandoned half-sunken fishing boats that give the area a somewhat ominous atmosphere and can become the background for a very unusual photo shoot. Lagada is a small village crossed by a river that flows into the sea. At its mouth is a picturesque harbor, which is connected by a wooden bridge to a very nice cozy beach.

After relaxing in the coastal tavern, you can continue your journey north and visit the bustling and lively port city of Kardamilla, with its many ancient temples and historical monuments. To complete the acquaintance in the eastern part of the island, it would be better to go back on another road that leads to Vrontados through Pitius and Eros.
