Agios Prokopios beach

Agios Prokopios is one of the most beautiful beaches of Naxos, which most often falls into the top lists of picturesque coasts, not only in Greece but also throughout Europe. The Greeks constantly uphold the preservation of the pristine charm of this coast, hindering its development with modern buildings and entertainment centers. This beach is located about 5.5 km south-west of the capital of the island, next to the Agios Georgios , from which many people walk here.

Beach description

The almost two-kilometer beachline of Agios Prokopios impresses with its vast expanses of snow-white sand, contrasting with azure turquoise (depending on the sunlight) waters with foamy lambs of small waves.

The beach is famous for its ideal conditions for rest:

  • there are almost never very strong winds and too high waves;
  • the sea is impressive with incredibly clear waters, ideal for snorkeling;
  • the spectacular purity of the shore and water has been repeatedly marked by the Blue Flag

Small waves allow you to join beginners in this sport on this beach. Bu when resting with children here, it is worth to be careful or for a safer pastime (especially with the kids) still choose a different beach. The entrance to the water is sharp, and the depth starts almost at the very shore.

It is also worth noting that the waters here are much cooler than on many other beaches of Naksos (maybe due to the presence of cold underwater springs). On the northern outskirts, which are more rocky shores, naturism supporters usually like to rest.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

The popularity of the beach among vacationers has contributed to the development of a certain share of infrastructure here. Part of it is distinguished by more comfortable conditions for relaxation, and a part (mainly the northern one) retains its pristine charm, devoid of glimpses of comfort.

On some sections of the coast, sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent. There is also a dive center with rental equipment for diving. On both ends of the beach, accessible by buses from the island’s capital, there are beach bars and taverns where you can have a tasty meal after swimming in the sea. Toilets are only in them, but not on the beach itself. There are also no changing cabins, and there is only one shower on the beach.

More taverns and restaurants are in the village of the same name closest to the beach, where you can also find hotels for accommodation. For example, you can stay in Ariadne Hotel Naxos from which to the beach it is only 30 m, or in the hotel Camara, which is located directly opposite the beach.

Useful information

  1. You can rent bicycles on Agios Georgios and get to this semi-wild beach in this way, admiring the colorful scenery along the way. On the northern edge of the beach you can see the remains of a salt mine, which was the center for salt extraction on the island a few decades ago. From the capital to the beach you can reach by regular buses, which run all day every half hour.
  2. On the outskirts of the beach you can admire the ancient church, from which the beach and the village received their names. On July 8, it celebrates the day of its patron – Prokopios, which is an interesting cultural event in the best Greek traditions.
  3. In the old days, the northern edge of the beach served as a harbor for sheltering smugglers. Even now, near the cliffs, you can sometimes find the remains of sunken fishing boats here.
