Mikri Vigla beach

Mikri Vigla is one of the most picturesque beaches on the southwestern outskirts of Naxos. It is located about 18 km south of the capital of the island and is famous as a true paradise for lovers of water extreme sports. Ideal wind-wave conditions made it a kind of “Mecca” of Naxos for kiters and windsurfers, and the colorful landscapes of untouched civilization of nature attract here also supporters of beach ecotourism.

Beach description

On the one side of the coast of Mikri Vigla is bounded by a scenic cliffs covered with preserved ancient cedar forest, which has become a kind of business card of these beach landscapes. On the other side, the beach rests on the southern edge of PLaka – no less attractive for the island's leisure.

The entire 1 km long beachline is covered with very fine sand, the whiteness of which sparkles with the shine of jewels in the sunlight. The same fine light sand is also found on the sea bottom, which makes the blue waters seem particularly transparent.

  • The sea here is pretty shallow, which allows you rest even with kids.
  • But still, it is worth remembering the significant waves that have made this coast a paradise for those who like to glide on the water under the sails of windsurf boards or under the dome of a kite. The northern edge of the beach is especially popular for this purpose, where the stability of meltemi winds prevails.
  • The southern edge of the coast, which is the most of protected from the winds and strong waves and serves as a safe haven for boats, is more suitable for vacation with children. The same part of the beach is also suitable for diving.

The width of Mikri Vigla Beach reaches 20 m that allows numerous admirer of extreme water sports settling there. One should keep in mind that sea urchins can be found in the sea close to rocks. That's why water shoes will come in useful, and you'll be grateful for safety of your legs.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Mikri Vigla beach is more designed for recreation of water extremes. Therefore, the main infrastructure here is aimed at satisfying their needs. On the northern end of the beach there are 2 water leisure clubs where you can rent all the necessary equipment to conquer the waves, as well as use the services of experienced instructors to get involved in kiting and windsurfing.

On the southern edge of the beach, which most often becomes a place of family relaxation, there are several cozy beach bars, cafes and taverns. Some of these establishments may offer to rent sunbeds and umbrellas, but on the entire coast such a service sector is not provided. Therefore, if you want to join the conquest of the waves here, you will have to take care of the provisions and sources of minimal comfort.

Useful information

  1. From the capital to this beach of the island you can reach by regular bus, which runs several times a day. It is even easier to get here from the coast of Plaka, and from Mikri Vigla, if you have a rented car, you can go to the beach of Orkos.
  2. Water extreme sports are relevant from May to September, when the most favorable winds prevail for this. It is better for beginners to go to the water early in the morning when the wind is still low. In the late morning, the wind increases, which makes this beach also suitable for more experienced kiters. In the afternoon, the waters here are most calm, which allows you to simply swim, without any extreme.
  3. You should rent bicycles and take a trip to the surroundings, where you can visit the colorful traditional villages. At the top of the cape above the beach, there are the ruins of an old tower, which was previously used by pirates as a lookout point.
