Grotta beach

Grotta is a sandy and pebble beach located in a small bay on the coast of the Aegean Sea, in the northern suburbs of Chora, the capital of Naxos. The name of the beach translated from Italian means "cave".

Beach description

Staying on Grotta beach, visitors can enjoy the magnificent views of the ancient ruins of Apollo's temple, Portaru, Aegean Sea, and modern buildings of Grotta. Visiting the latter is a wonderful possibility to see the remains of the largest Mycenaean city of naksos, and to take pictures. You can get to the beach on feet by walking from the central square of Hora, or from the port, by driving a car.

Due to strong winds, the sea in the beach area isn't calm, and waves are often high. The sea bottom is rocky, so it is suitable only for swimmers confident about their strength. The beach has no tourist infrastructure, except the small public parking lot and several options of residential lease. Among beach entertainment, Grotta offers snorkeling, allowing to see the ruins of the ancient Mycenaean city of Naksos to take sun baths, and to make a beautiful photoshoot.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Naxos for a beach vacation is during the summer months, particularly from June to September. During this period, the weather is typically warm and sunny, ideal for beach activities and swimming in the Aegean Sea.

  • June: The start of the summer offers pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making it a perfect time for those seeking a more peaceful beach experience.
  • July and August: These are the peak months for tourism. Visitors can enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, crystal-clear waters, and a plethora of beachside activities. However, it's important to book accommodations in advance as this is the high season.
  • September: As the summer winds down, the temperatures remain warm, but the island becomes less crowded. This is an excellent time for visitors who prefer a quieter setting to enjoy the beaches of Naxos.

Regardless of the month, Naxos boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, with Agios Prokopios and Plaka Beach being among the most popular. To fully enjoy the island's offerings, consider the balance between the lively high season and the tranquil shoulder months when planning your trip.
