Plaka beach

Plaka is a picturesque beach, invariably among the ten most beautiful, not only in Naxos, but throughout Greece. It is located on the western edge of the island, about 9 km south of its capital and in the vicinity of Agia Anna . Initially, this coast had a reputation as a nudist beach, but now lovers of naturism are left only with the southern outskirts, and most of it is a favorite vacation spot for families with children and water sports enthusiasts.

Beach description

With a length of more than 4 km, Plaka Beach is never too crowded. But there are still a lot of vacationers during the season, although much less than on Agios Georgios. But in the off-season you can enjoy almost absolute privacy and peace.

The coast is covered with very fine golden sand (powder white on the edge of the beach) with occasionally occuring tiny white pebbles. You can simply admire the spectacular white sand dunes. The sea on Plaka Beach impresses with incredibly clear waters with azure tones.

Among the features of this beach is also worth noting such nuances:

  • the sea on PLaka is quite deep and the waters here are cooler than on the other beaches of the island;
  • the entrance to the sea quite sharp, the depth starts very quickly, but there is a small area of shallow water near the shore;
  • the small but constant waves that form here are ideal for beginners in windsurfers and kiters.

Due to the long length of the beach and its picturesque scenery, long hiking trips with the possibility of photo shoots against the background of sand dunes and the sea are very popular here. Horseback riding in the surroundings of the beach is also available.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Plaka is better known as a wild beach, but still some glimpses of infrastructure are present here. On some of its parts it is possible to rent sun loungers and straw umbrellas. There are 2 sports clubs on Plaka beach where you can rent equipment for water activities. But the rescue service does not guard this long coast.

As for the accommodation, we can note such nuances.

  • In the village of Plaka, you can find several large hotels. You can stay closest to the coast in the hotel complex Three Brothers from which it's a few minutes walk to the beach.
  • Apartments and rooms are also for rent in the vicinity of the beach. For example, apartments Acti Plaka located right on the sandy shore of Plaka beach, surrounded by taverns and cafes.
  • On the outskirts of the coast there is an organized camping - the most budget option for accommodation on the beach.

In the vicinity of the beach you can find several taverns, beach bars and cafes. Toilets are only there, and they are absent on the coast themselves. There are many taverns and shops in the village itself.

Useful information

  1. Bus service from the capital to the beach is available - about 15 minutes, there are journeys every half hour to midnight with a stop right in front of the beach. But still, the most optimal option to get to Plaka is a rented car. This will make it possible to visit the beaches of the island located no less interesting for recreation – Agios Prokopios, Orkos and Agia Anna, which borders on Plaka. All of them are distinguished by a more developed infrastructure, and usually on their beach it is noisy and crowded.
  2. In the village, you can rent a boat or powerboat with a professional snorkeling instructor and go for a walk with a visit to the best places for scuba diving. On the Plaka Beach, such leisure is not relevant because of the very sine sand at the bottom, which, with heaving of the sea, significantly reduces visibility in the water. Also in the village of Plaka there are many nightclubs where you can spend an exciting evening after a day's rest on the beach.
