Sahara beach

This beautiful beach is located on the west coast of Naxos, south of the small town of Mikri Vigla. It occupies a "middle ground" between Parthenos beach in the north and Kastraki beach in the south. In general, the Sahara beach is a calmer alternative to the popular Mikri Vigla, also offering ideal conditions for windsurfing, but being less busy. This is a spacious wide beach where everyone can find a cozy place, no matter how long he likes to sleep.

Beach description

Bright fine sand, azure water, dunes and lake situated right behind it form the fantastic background. The northern part of the beach is well-protected from the wind with rocks, so people who want to "lie on the beach and to swim" will feel calm and comfortable there. After overcoming several rocks, you will get to the small, picturesque bay, where bright photos can be taken. Those who want to engage in windsurfing should, on the contrary, choose the unprotected part of the beach where winds are stable, and where waves are formed.

From Naksos city (16 km away), two roads lead to the beach:

  • Through Galando and Vivlo. The route has a convenient interchange and high quality asphalt covering.
  • Through Agia Anna and Plaka beaches. The road goes along the beach, so in some places, it is narrow and not so well-developed in comparison with the first route.

This place is perfect for children, for water is shallow for first 40 meters. The beach is even and slightly sloping - you can enter water safely, you won't hurt your feet or misstep on a sudden steep.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
