Giola beach

As such, the beach, in the classical sense, is not here. Giola is a rock pool formed naturally. It is fenced off from the open sea with just a thin strip of marble cliff. Only the most patient and physically prepared people will be able to get here, because to swim in this lagoon, you will have to overcome a considerable distance on foot.

Beach description

There is no sand, no shingle. It’s just a piece of marble, in which, in the course of natural processes, a recess has formed, in which water leaked. The water depth is 3 meters. Due to this, the water in the lagoon is always warm - it is warmed up to the bottom. During high tides and storms, waves easily cross the marble barrier and fill the pool with cool, refreshing sea water.

The total area of the pool is 15 by 20 meters. The nearest settlement to the lagoon is the village of Astris.

Rest here will be please only excellent swimmers, at the same time, mainly young people. This is definitely not a place for family rest or for older people, as access to water is difficult and depth begins immediately. If you decide to visit this place, be sure to bring along swimming slippers, as it is possible to injure legs, when leaving the lagoon. Those, who can’t swim, will just get bored of sitting on this marble block, deprived of any entertainment.

Everyone, who wants to see this wonderful nature, gets here by car. The road passes 2 km from the lagoon. Many leave their cars just off the road. Some park in the first parking lot at the cafe, from which it is still necessary to walk about half an hour. If you have a crossover or jeep, you can try to get to the lagoon right along the dirt road, which is very bad, but nonetheless it is roadway.

When is the best time to go?

Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season  begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.

Infrastructure

Completely absent. There are no sun loungers, no parasols, no shops with cafes, no toilets. That is, get ready for the fact that you are going where only nature and the sea will be. Therefore, take everything with you - napkins, bedding, towels, parasols and creams. By the way, regarding protection from the sun - you should especially prepare yourself. You will swim on an open plateau, as well as sunbathe. Therefore, it is better not to spend all day here to avoid getting a sunstroke.

The closest hotel, which is located to this place, is a couple of kilometers away.

Useful information

This lagoon is in the TOP 10 cleanest places on our planet. It is worth a visit, if only for the sake of it.

This place remains pristine untouched – the territory is not cleaned or improved by anyone. Meanwhile, in the pool itself, it would be really nice to have a ladder. Many tourists note that when rising from the water they get bruises and abrasions. In addition to the inconvenient exit, Giola will also "please" the sea urchins, who insidiously await the guests on the rock walls and at the bottom of the lagoon.
