Giola beach

Giola Beach in Thasos, Greece, offers a unique seaside experience unlike the typical sandy shores. Here, you'll find Giola, a stunning natural rock pool, cradled by a slender ribbon of marble cliffs that separates it from the open sea. This hidden gem is reserved for the most determined and physically fit adventurers, as reaching this enchanting lagoon requires a significant trek on foot. Those who make the journey will be rewarded with the chance to swim in one of nature's most beautiful creations.

Beach description

Imagine a natural marvel carved from marble, where the absence of sand or shingle only accentuates its unique allure. Giola beach, a lagoon nestled within marble, has been sculpted by nature's hand. Over time, a recess has formed, collecting water that seeps in. With a depth of three meters, the lagoon's water remains perpetually warm, heated thoroughly from the surface to the bottom. During high tides and storms, the waves crest over the marble barrier, replenishing the pool with cool, invigorating sea water.

The lagoon spans an impressive 15 by 20 meters and lies in close proximity to the quaint village of Astris. Giola beach is a haven for adept swimmers, particularly attracting a youthful crowd. It is not typically recommended for family outings or for the elderly, as the immediate depth and challenging access to the water can pose difficulties. Should you venture to this stunning spot, remember to pack swimming slippers to protect your feet upon exiting the lagoon. Non-swimmers may find themselves at a loss for activities, simply perched atop the marble, devoid of diversions.

Visitors eager to witness this breathtaking natural wonder typically arrive by car. The road concludes a mere 2 kilometers from the lagoon, where many choose to leave their vehicles just off the road. Others opt to park at the first available lot near a café, which entails an additional half-hour walk. Those with a crossover or jeep may brave the challenging dirt road leading directly to the lagoon. Although rough and ready, it remains navigable.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Thasos for a beach vacation is during the summer months, when the island's climate is most favorable for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the beautiful Aegean Sea. Specifically, the period from June to September offers the ideal conditions for a classic beach holiday.

  • June: The start of the summer brings pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making it a perfect time for those looking to enjoy a more peaceful beach experience.
  • July and August: These are the peak tourist months, with the warmest weather and the most vibrant nightlife. The beaches are lively, and the sea is at its most inviting temperature.
  • September: As the summer winds down, the water remains warm, and the island becomes quieter. This month is excellent for visitors who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere while still enjoying the benefits of the summer weather.

Regardless of the month you choose, Thasos's stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and Greek hospitality make it a fantastic destination for a beach vacation. Just remember to book accommodations in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the high season.

Essential Beach Vacation Tips

Prepare to embrace the unadulterated beauty of nature, as this destination is completely untouched by commercialism. You won't find sun loungers, parasols, bustling shops, cozy cafes, or even public toilets here. This means you'll be stepping into a place where nature's tranquility and the sea's serenity are your sole companions. Consequently, it's crucial to pack all necessities - think napkins, bedding, towels, parasols, and sunscreen.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Given that you'll be basking on an open plateau and swimming in the clear waters, sun protection should be a top priority. To prevent sunburn or, worse, sunstroke, it's advisable not to spend the entire day under the direct sunlight. Be sure to bring ample sunscreen and consider timing your sunbathing to avoid the sun's peak hours.

Useful information

This lagoon is in the TOP 10 cleanest places on our planet. It is worth a visit, if only for the sake of it.

This place remains pristine untouched – the territory is not cleaned or improved by anyone. Meanwhile, in the pool itself, it would be really nice to have a ladder. Many tourists note that when rising from the water they get bruises and abrasions. In addition to the inconvenient exit, Giola will also "please" the sea urchins, who insidiously await the guests on the rock walls and at the bottom of the lagoon.
