Potos beach
Potos is a 2-kilometer long sandy and pebble beach located in the southern part of Thasos. Potos has a good microclimate - it is characterized by sunny weather, gentle waves and a gentle breeze that softens the heat. Water temperatures range from 18 °C (in winter) to 26 °C (in summer). From Greek, “Potos” is translated as “passionate desire”.

Beach description
The beach is covered with golden sand, rocks and shells. It is possible to safely walk barefoot on it. Another advantage of Potos is a smooth depth increase, a clear bottom and the absence of sea urchins.
In the waters of Potos, fish, squid and octopus are fished out. Local taverns prepare the best dishes from these products and season them with delicious wine. On the beach there is a small pier of rocks and snow-white marble, which offers a beautiful view of Mount Athos. Fishing boats and tourist launchs moor to it.
The main contingent of Potos is families and youth from Germany. Also, Greeks, English-speaking tourists and residents of Eastern Europe rest here.
The beach offers the guests the following services:
- rental of sunbeds and umbrellas;
- water sports (surfing, parachuting, banana rides, car rental, etc.);
- tasting food and drinks at local cafes;
- boat excursions.
Buses from Limenas run to the beach. It is also possible to get here by personal transport or taxi. The distance between Potos and the island's capital is 45 km. Near the beach there are shops, hotels, souvenir shops, and entertainment establishments.
The following sights are located near Potos:
- Ethnographic Museum of Potos;
- 200-year-old church (church of St. Dmitry);
- the old quarter, where wealthy fishermen lived. It was erected several centuries ago.
When is it better to go?
Greece - a country with a long length from north to south, so the recommendations will vary depending on the place where you are going. The holiday season begins in May and reaches a peak in July-August: there are too many tourists, and the temperature on the southern islands reaches 40 degrees, which may still not play a role on the beach, but certainly not suitable for sightseeing. So the best time to relax in Greece is the end of spring-beginning of summer or September-October.
