Metalia beach

Embarking on a journey to Metalia Beach in Thasos, Greece, is an adventure in itself. The path to this hidden gem is challenging, requiring visitors to navigate a steep descent on foot. Vehicles cannot traverse this rugged terrain. However, the effort is richly rewarded! Metalia Beach is often hailed as the island's crown jewel, offering breathtaking vistas from the shoreline and beneath the waves. These stunning scenes are a must-see, beckoning to be experienced firsthand.

Beach description

If facing the sea, the beach is to the left of Limenaria pier, the second-largest city on the island after Thassos.

It is a wide sandy strip, enclosed on both sides by a cape. Although the beach itself is sandy, the entry into the sea is rocky and slippery. The exception is the edge of the beach closest to Limenaria - this is where most vacationers congregate.

On the same side as the cliff, there is a hole through which, if one bends down, it is possible to access a secluded bay. From there, one can swim to a deserted island and savor the views of the coast from the sea. Adventure seekers who are proficient swimmers should definitely embark on this journey.

The sea entry may not be suitable for parents with small children or for those who are not confident swimmers. It is quite steep and consists of a mix of rocks and sand. The slippery surface of the stone plateau, upon which the beach rests, adds to the difficulty.

For a safer entry into the sea, two paths made of shingle bags have been arranged. However, even with these measures, venturing into the sea with children can be challenging. It is advisable to bring along special shoes to protect against the "surprises" that may lurk at the bottom, such as prickly sea urchins. Be prepared for the depth to increase abruptly where the rocks end.

The beach is seldom crowded, which adds to its allure and romantic ambiance. It is a slice of nature where you can commune with the elements in solitude.

Access to this idyllic spot is possible on foot from Limenaria or by car.

When is the best time to go?

The best time to visit Thasos for a beach vacation is during the summer months, when the island's climate is most favorable for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the beautiful Aegean Sea. Specifically, the period from June to September offers the ideal conditions for a classic beach holiday.

  • June: The start of the summer brings pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, making it a perfect time for those looking to enjoy a more peaceful beach experience.
  • July and August: These are the peak tourist months, with the warmest weather and the most vibrant nightlife. The beaches are lively, and the sea is at its most inviting temperature.
  • September: As the summer winds down, the water remains warm, and the island becomes quieter. This month is excellent for visitors who prefer a more relaxed atmosphere while still enjoying the benefits of the summer weather.

Regardless of the month you choose, Thasos's stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and Greek hospitality make it a fantastic destination for a beach vacation. Just remember to book accommodations in advance, especially if you plan to visit during the high season.
