A perfect beach for family holidays

Gioia Tauro is a luxury three-kilometer sand and pebbly beach located along the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, on the territory of a small same-name port town of Reggio di Calabria Province in Calabria Region. Gioia Tauro is an open space not protected by rocks. The beach overlooks the cape of Capo Vaticano and Lipari island.

Beach description

Gioia Tauro sand is mixed with gravel in some sites, so it is desirable to use special shoes. Gravel bottom is rather even and slightly sloping.

The territory is equipped with deck chairs, washing cabins and changing cabins. Bars, cafes, restaurants are open. There are several parking lots by the beach. The majority of visitors here are European tourists, the locals and their fellow nationals from all the country regions. There are many German and British retired people, family couples, and young families with children among the tourists.

Gioia Tauro is a pleasant place for relaxation both for people who value secluded rest and family couples with children because it is half-desert even in the high season. The bottom is well-visible through transparent water which is especially important for children.

When is it better to go

In terms of climate, the period from May to October is the most favorable for visiting Italy. The air and water temperature becomes ideal for a classic beach holiday, followed by a trip to the coast of Italy. However, it is necessary to remember that a long summer with the scorching sun, warm sea and pleasant sea breeze attracts crowds of tourists.

Infrastructure

Gioia Tauro has numerous hotels, apartments, and guest houses. The only obstacle faced by our fellow nationals is the language barrier. Russian-speaking staff is very rare. It is desirable to speak basic English or Italian. Tourists can rent a places located several meters away from the beach.

The entre wide range of local and and international cuisine is represented in restaurants, taverns, pizzerias, trattorias, gelaterias, coffee shops of Gioia Tauro, that are in abundance on streets, public gardens, parks, and squares. Many establishments provide “to go” service. You should try:

  • colorful dishes from the south of Italy — pecorino cheese, Calabrian Fileja pasta, Nduja spicy sausage;
  • wines from local vineyards —Greco Bianco, Gaglioppo;
  • confectionery — truffle ice cream Tartufo di Pizzo, honey biscuits Mostaccioli di Soriano Calabro invented by friar of the Order of Preachers of Soriano mansion 500 years ago;
  • excellent coffee, the recipe of which must have been known to inhabitants of this original region as a big secret is served in any cafe, trattoria, or bar.
