Scilla beach

Perfect place for those who love extreme

Scilla, a charming blend of an ancient fishing village and a contemporary resort, is enveloped in myth and legend. Nestled in the northern reaches of the Strait of Messina, this idyllic beach forms part of the enchanting Costa Viola, aptly named for its unique lilac-hued waters.

Beach description

Welcome to Scilla Beach, a picturesque destination where the sand, occasionally interspersed with gravel, creates a unique shoreline. The sea deepens a few meters from the edge, inviting beachgoers to tread carefully. For an optimal experience, we recommend donning special shoes as you stroll along the beach and wade into the water, ensuring your feet are protected from any hidden surprises.

Scilla is a haven for aquatic adventure seekers. Here, you can indulge in a variety of water sports such as diving, surfing, and water skiing. The local reefs and submerged rocks present challenges for sailors but are a diver's paradise. The vibrant marine life, including multi-colored algae, schools of fish, and mysterious underwater grottos, exerts an almost magnetic pull on those who are passionate about exploring the depths of the sea.

However, caution is advised for swimming enthusiasts. The waters of Scilla are known for their unpredictable whirlpools and the chilly currents of the Strait of Messina, whose directions are as mysterious as the tides. Despite these challenges, the water near the beach remains invitingly warm for most of the year.

Optimal Time for Your Visit

The Italian Tyrrhenian coast, with its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, is a prime destination for a beach vacation. However, to fully enjoy its beauty, timing is crucial. The best period to visit largely depends on your preferences for weather, crowd levels, and local events.

  • Summer (June to August): This is the peak season, offering the warmest weather with temperatures often soaring above 30°C (86°F). It's the perfect time for sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the vibrant nightlife. However, be prepared for crowded beaches and higher prices.
  • Early Fall (September to October): The weather remains warm, but the crowds start to thin out, making it a great time for those seeking a more tranquil experience. The sea is still warm enough for swimming, and accommodation prices begin to drop.
  • Late Spring (May to early June): This period is ideal for visitors who prefer mild temperatures and fewer tourists. The coast begins to awaken from its winter slumber, offering a peaceful yet lively atmosphere.

In conclusion, if you're looking for the classic beach holiday with bustling activity, summer is your best bet. For a more relaxed trip with pleasant weather, consider early fall or late spring. Regardless of the time you choose, the Tyrrhenian coast won't disappoint.

What to see in Scilla

  • the fishing village of Chianalea, looking as a fanciful agglomerate of small houses lining out the beach at the water's edge in a continuous line;
  • tourist center of Scilla city where all bars, hotels, restaurants are located.

Ruffo Castle erected in the second half of the 13th century bristles on the rock by the beach. Nowadays, museums with interesting expositions are open in the castle premises. It is especially beautiful at night, with the illumination.
