Baker Beach

Baker Beach is a public municipal beach situated in the north-west part of San Francisco and belonging to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Its length slightly exceeds 1.5 km and includes the classic beach zone, along with the small site of the nudist beach. Baker Beach was named after John Henry Baker who owned real estate in this part of the Pacific Coast in the middle 19th century. Due to stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge and ocean, the beach is very popular mong its guests.

Beach description

The coast in Baker Beach area is covered with white sand and is surrounded with rocks. Right from the beach, the visitors can observe the herds of dolphins, whales, and sea bears, pelicans and migrating coast birds. Baker Beach is a dangerous place to swim due to permanently cold water (around +14° C), presence of uneven flows, and ocean currents. The visitors have the following possibilities here:

  • to take sun baths;
  • surf;
  • play frisbee;
  • walk along the shore, enjoying beautiful views and the possibility to spot asteroids, mussels, and sea flowers during the ebb;
  • take beautiful shots;
  • enjoy fishing;
  • hold picnics.

In early autumn, in September and October, when the weather is warm and sunny, the beach is often overcrowded with visitors, romantic couples, families, lonely tourists and companies, and is father free in other days. The weather on Baker Beach in the period from may to July is mostly cool and foggy.

You can get to the beach by bus No.29 or by car which you will be able to leave afterwards at one of paid parking lots.

When is the best time to go?

To lay off on the beaches of the mainland, it is best to come in the summer, when a sufficiently warm temperature is settled for swimming. Places like Florida or the Hawaiian Islands are comfortable all year round.

Infrastructure

Baker Beach is open only at day and closes even before sunset. During their stay on Baker Beach, guests can use, for free:

  • parking lots;
  • picnic and BBQ tables;
  • toilets.

There is no other infrastructure on the beach - no restaurants, stores. or a beach rescuers' station. So, if you are going to Baker Beach, bring along everything you need for comfortable recreation. Close to the beach, there are a few hotels and motels where you can stay for a night, for example, the hotel Drisco that offers de luxe and standard suites to its guests.

Staying on the beach, many tourists prefer picnics by just spreading plaids on sand. Beside, there is a specially equipped picnic zone which is situated in the cypress grove. You can come to Baker Beach with your dog and walk it loose. There are no beach rescuers on the beach, and no chance to rent sling chairs and umbrellas. The nudist beach is located in its northern part.
